what chip do you suggest

It's been my expierence that aftermarket chips are designed to improve performance on a stock engine.

You may want to look into a custom maker for one if you mod your engine like you have stated you want to.

I agree with yZR2k.  If you're doing internal engine mods, you should go with custom programming.  Check www.fastchip.com  His work is proven by many GM owners.  And I've heard the turnaround time is fast.

What year is your truck?

Aren't the newer trucks chips programmable? I know my friend with a 95 Z28 has a special progam on his laptop and just reprograms the stock chip whenever he makes a change.

If it is not programmable, you can also try http://www.superchips.com

there is a chip that can be adjusted from stock-economy-performance but they are still designed to recallibrate the computer that belongs to a stock engine.

Your friend can get past that with his Z28 because the chip either belongs with his car(simple mods such as bolt ons don't effect the computer as much as a rebuild)or he has a reprogrammer.

To the best of my knowledge, the only laptop program avialable for the trucks is the autotap which just lets you know where the vehicle is at and what adjustments need to be made.

My buddy with the Z28 is on vacation this week, as soon as he gets back I will find out all about it.

Well, it seems it depends on which chip you have now!!

If you have an OBD1 chip (same as vette, camaro, trans am from 93 to 97) check out http://www.mustgofaster.net this is the guy that programs all the pre 98 third gen F-bodies around here. He can reprogram yours to whatever specs your engine iis or sell you a new custom programmed chip. He also will reprogram free for 60 days if you don't like the power curve, shiftpoints whatever. Around here he often goes to the drags and will reprogram several cars between races.

If you have an OBDII chip it cannot be reprogrammed (at least not yet) and is actually soldered to the computer circuit board so the whole computer needs to be replaced. (unless you are VERY good with a soldering iron, personally I wouldn't try it, and I repaired micro-miniature circuit boards for a living for 12 years. Just too easy to ruin a whole board.)

So the big question is what year trucks have what chip, that I'm not sure of.  I assume the 98 and up Silverados have the OBDII. Anyone know for sure?

I doubt that they woulb be able to be reprogrammed from '93-'95 atleast.

I'm pretty sure that the chips from the throttle body injection are different from the SFI's in the 'Vettes/Camaros but they may fall under the same pretense as the car chips.I know that they are not soldered and can be removed so someone may have come up with a reprogramming method for them too.

The OBD1 and OBDII are federally mandated for emissions standards on all cars and will different manufacturers meet the OBD standards with different chips, I doubt GM would bother making more than one chip for all it's models, especially since they are programable. The only reason I don't know which chips are in the trucks is because trucks often have different emissions standards than cars. I will try to get more info and let everyone know.

I'm not sure about the Vettes, but F-bodies began using OBDII computers halfway through the 1995 model year.  If I'm not mistaken, 1996 & up Silverados have OBDII.  Like I said before Fastchip is the way to go if you need custom programming.  He can do any GM vehicle from 1985-present.

Hmm, that's what I thought too, but I know this guy programs Z28s up to 97 so if it OBDII somehow it is still reporgrammable. He is at the Daytona spring hot rod show and won't be back until Monday to let me know what he can reporgram and what he can't
