73 Chev Th350 Gone Bad?

Hi all,

I have a 73 chev 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive with a 350 motor and th 350 automatic transmission. Plowing snow the other night all of a sudden it would not move when placed in 1st gear. It will still move in drive, second and reverse. I usually plow in low range as I was told that was easier on the transmission. I had noticed when moving the shift lever it sort of grates or is rough on shifting when going back into park like its dragging or something. Fluid was about a half a quart low but I would'nt think that would cause it. Is the transmission gone or is there some way to check or diagnose what is wrong.

Thanks,

Martin

Well the fluid being low can cause problems with your transmission! It can cause it to slip and some gears might not work... The first thing that I would do is restore the fluid levels... If there was still a problem that I would get it checked out!

Check your linkage and lube, have someone work the shifter while you watch. If all looks alright have your helper put it in low and with your hand help it (right at the trany)and see if it goes in. It might need adjusted. You can do that by loosen the 1/2(wrench) bolt on the rod and move it so there is more movement toward low, just alittle bit don't go to far. Tighten it back up and make sure it works in all gears.

Thanks Delray,

I will try that when it gets above freezing.
