Air filter performance on the cheap

Hi,

I just purchased a 2002 GMC Seirra 4.8L auto 2-wheel drive pick-up truck.

I plan to have installed a catalytic-converter-back MagnaFlow muffler.

I need to research aircleaners to match the new muffler.

I have heard about K&N Generation II air cleaner available for about $500 (Canadian$). A little pricey.

However, a friend put a 14" round 3" deep 3/4" drop clam-shell K&N filter on his 2001 5.2L Dodge Ram 1500 for about $150 (Canadian$). He says he loves the performance, sound and especially the price.

Is there something similar for the GMC 4.8L with a horizontal intake on the throtle body? The Dogde has a  vertical intake.

Thanks Ron

First of all welcome to the site...

On your question about the air filter system you have a few other choices than the GenII K&N.  First option is to just buy a replacement K&N that replaces your current filter directly, i.e drops into your current filter box.  Secondly you could make your own cold air intake system.  I have done several for Jeeps (also horizontal intake) and they are not that difficult.  I just wouldn't pay $500.00 for something you can make for about $100.00!

Go with the UPD kit.  You can order them online and there is a group purchase available right now until April 19.  Just type Group Purchase in the memo/message area and you will get the discounted price.  I just got mine put on a couple weeks ago and love it.  $209 US delivered to my doorstep for colors....$189 US for black!!!  Take a look at: www.ultimatepd.com
