Steering Position Sensor (evo) Replacement

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 Suburban that the dealer has confirmed needs a new Steering Position Sensor. They want nearly $300 for the part and labor to replace (wow!!!).

Two questions:

1) Is it as simple as unplugging the wire harness to the sensor removing the 1 bolt that I can see that attaches the 2 shafts together, and sliding the sensor off the shaft? Once the bolt is removed I'm assuming the lower shaft will "slide" down out of the way giving me enough clearance to slide the EVO sensor off the shaft and replace it with the new one?

2) I would like to confirm the GM part number: 26084178

I appreciate any and all assistance.

Thanks!

It is a simple process to replace. You have it down. Just make sure nobody spins the steering wheel while it is disconnected and make sure it attaches the same way. I marked each piece with a marker to make sure.

Did the repair work? I have an O3 YXL Denali and think mine is bad. Power steering works fine turning right, but it does not work going left. Repair guy tells me it is a valve in the steering gear, but I am suspicious. Really appreciate a response back.

That sensor is used to transmit hand wheel angle to the vses module (stability system). If the sensor is bad then you would be lighting up the dash with a trouble code. If you are not setting any diagnostic trouble codes and your gear may be suspect - however 2nd, 3rd opinion may be helpful.
