20 Inch Wheels /17 Inch Spare

I have a brand new Sierra SLT (2008) with the 20 inch wheel package from the factory. Any ideas why they install a 17 inch spare...........and will it work if I need to use it??

they do that to save money, a 17 inch steel wheel and tire are more cheap than a 20 inch and yes it will work fine, since both have the same diameter..
