Friend's Gmc Sierra?

Hello

 

My friend has a 2002 GMC Sierra with a 4.8 litre in it. He is wanting to know if this cam will fit in the his truck http://www.thunderracing.com/dynographs/?a...ead&pgid=94

 

But, he was told to buy the third one down titled "Old Man Truck Cam" Visit My Website

 

He has heard from some that the first linked cam will be fine and heard from others that it will not work.

So if anyone has anything to say like which one will be better or fit please share..

 

He is also planning to put on headers and a stall if the cam can work..

I like the TR220 better for that setup than the TR OMC. Have him order the 112+4 LSA version vs the 114LSA. It will boost cylinder pressure, DCR, and provide better midrange with little adverse affects. The 112LSA will idle a tad rougher and need more skill to tune but it's worth it. He'll want a 2400+stall and headers will help alot. Don't forget the tune. It won't run for crap without one.

Thanks for the reply man. Yeah he called TR and they said the OMC would be the only one that would work for his truck, but he's also been told that the TR220 would fit also. So he's indifferent about the situation. He plans on getting headers and a 2800 stall.

I'm not sure if I'm following you correctly on the 112+4 LSA version vs. 114 LSA.

What exactly does the +4 mean? And how is it different from the one that I provided in the link? How do you order it from them?

I still recommend the TR220 112 with those intended mods. The +4 in relation to the 112LSA means it has 4 degrees of advance ground into the cam when ground by Comp for Thunder Racing. This lowers the effective powerband, provides a bump in lowend and midrange and increases DCR and cylinder pressure due to the valve events. As far as I know all TR's 112LSA grinds are ground with +4 advance so have him order the TR220 112LSA and be happy with the power. I used to run a TR224 112 in my 02 Camaro SS. It was a H/C car that made 420rwhp @ 396rwtq. Loved the power and driveability of the TR grinds.

He's supposed to order the cam soon, so we'll see how it works out..haha

Also, how much of an improvement would he notice if he put a LS6 or LQ9 intake on?

The GM truck intake is designed to build lowend and midrange power yet still providing decent topend power in the low 6000rpms range. The LS6 intake is the exact opposite of the truck intake. Above 6000rpms its all LS6 intake in terms of power production. Yet, IMO keep the truck intake. These trucks are heavy unlike a car and the truck intake is more suited for torque production which these trucks need.

Ok cool.. So how about something like a FAST intake?

Would there be any large improvements by adding that or not?

Also, what else would help gain power without being outrageously priced?

He's already got an exhaust and cai and is getting headers, cam, and stall..

With his setup, rpm range and engine CFM requirement he won't gain much if any power with the FAST90mm to justify the $700 cost. Keep the stock truck intake and put that $700 towards a set of Stage 2 5.3L heads. Power is made in the heads and cam. Everything else simply supports it. For cheap he can port or have his stock 75mm TB ported. Usually 5-8rwhp gain if done right. I did mine myself. ASP 25% underdrive pulley. Another 3-8rwhp.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
