Mike Wallace has left Ultra Motorsports to take over the driving duties of Penske Racing's No. 12 Fords for the remainder of the season.

Wallace will be in the car Thursday for qualifying for Sunday's UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Wallace will, at least temporarily, become a teammate with his brother, Rusty, driver of Penske's No. 2 Fords.

Penske Racing issued a brief statement about 6 p.m. Wednesday announcing its new driver. On Tuesday morning, the team announced its driver since 1997, Jeremy Mayfield, had been released.

Wallace's move leaves open a spot in Ultra Motorsports' No. 7 Fords. A team spokesperson said Wednesday evening the team would field an entry at Charlotte that but no driver had been chosen.

Candidates this weekend include Kevin Lepage, released Monday from Morgan-McClure Motorsports, and Mayfield.
