Paint Stock Steel Wheels?

Recommended Posts

I hate my stock steel wheels. I want the stock 20" aluminum ones, but can't justify getting them until I need new tires. I'm thinking painting mine flat black may look better until then. Has any one done this? Pics? Opinions would be apreciated also.

It's been done... and they look good that way too. Another idea would be to have them powder coated. A guy local to me does it for $120 for a set of 4.

You can paint them. Opinions will vary on how black will look.

If you do paint them, I would just clean the heck out of them, scuff with a scotch pad, mask, and spray away. Obviously you want to remove them from the truck first so that you can get down around the lugs and keep spray off of the truck. If you want a long lasting job, have the tires taken off and have the wheels poedercoated. It's not all that expensive to do. Lastly, use glossy black if you have to go black. Flat black will end up looking like a BBQ grille.

 It will last longer and there is no risk of it peeling off.

I run Firestone Winterforce snow tires in the winter. I bought some black rims from a conversion company on Ebay to mount them for winter use. I'd like to find a chrome trim ring that fits to brighten them up a bit. These rims are the same as what my spare is mounted on with the Z71 package (debadged in picture) This should give you an idea how your rims painted black would look. Rick

You guys should think about looking for the stock 17" and 18" aluminum wheels. You can pick up a set of wheels and tires for under $500 and you'll have a much nicer looking wheel and most likely wider tires to boot.

Find the right deal and yes.

There's a set on sale on here right now for $700 and that's for some 18" Z71 wheels and tires.

VMax2007 sold his set of 20's with very low mileage on the tires for only $900.

EDIT: You'llhave to watch carefully and keep your eyes open but those kinds of deals are not unheard of. Check with your local tire shops and your dealer as well. Often, people swap wheels and tires and take a little trade-in cash for their old sets that then get resold.

Well i hear ya, its all about keeping your eyes open for the deals .. but factoring in usually 150 for shipping bumps it up alot
