Cleaning Under The Hood...

Recommended Posts

it's a balmy 70 degrees here today in NorCal  and wanted to share my under-hood cleaning experience...

this works flawlessly for me smile.gif

  • start with a cooling down engine, make sure it has sat for at least a 1/2 hour
  • cover your electronics, use a baggie and wrap a rubber band around it to seal off any under-splash
  • simple green everything!
  • let it sit for a few minutes
  • use a hose and a soft brush to hit the 'bling' spots under the hood (strut towers, engine cover, etc)
  • rinse till no more bubbles
  • take it for a 10 minute drive
  • pop the hood and wipe down anything that isn't already dry
  • apply your favorite (plastic safe) protectant, use a spray or wipe it on (wiping is usually less messy and overspray can attract dirt)

what other tips do you guys have?

I sometimes use the GUNK brand engine cleaner. It works great.

the nice part about Simple Green is that it's not caustic and doesn't mis-color plastics (or dry out hoses) - plus you can let it drain and not worry about the environment (dang)

I use stuff called "Spray nine" its an commercial cleaner, is amaizing stuff (not sure if available in US) Spray let soak, scrub if you have to, or just rinse off, IT also works wonderfully for cleaning oil air filters, (K&N) I have found it works really well on alluminum that is dark or oxidized, cleans it up almost like new! (see sig pic, i used it on my upper intake...)

I don`t know if its environmentally friendly, but not thinking so.... :uhoh:

Umm, where do the wobbly pops fit into your schedule. Can't do a good cleaning routine without a couple of wobblies to contemplate your work.

I do know to clean under the bug guard, for all those who have one clean all the gunk out of there a couple of times a year...

After you've got it clean and dry, I suggest using some Pig Spit for a nice clean, shiny look. It's a product originally developed for Harley guys but it works on anything. Just spray it on and wipe up any excess. It's that simple.
