My dad is ready to trade his 06 1500 in on a 3/4 ton for pulling his camper. He wants a diesel. He is trying to decide between the big 3 out there. I have heard good and bad on all 3 and I know everyone here is partial to GM but I would love some owner input.

Honestly, if I could have a 5.9 Cummins, I would. Hands down, it an effin torque monster. But I'd get an 01 era cummins.

Go with the Duramax.......my opinion is biased of course. ;)

Torque monster? The Duramax has 365 HP with 660 lb.-ft. of torque and the Cummins has 350 HP and 650 lb-ft.

I buy a new trailer-pulling truck about every 4 years and research/test-drive all the models.

The ideal "2500/3500" diesel truck would have a Cummins diesel, Allison tranny, Ford cabin, and GM frame/suspension.

They're all good.

I think a Cummins diesel with a Allison tranny would be the best combo. It's too bad that GM dosent own the rights to the cummins diesel engines.

If I was using the truck every day, I'd want a GM product purely for the ride. I ended up with a Dodge, hoping that the inline 6 cylinder Cummins would be more reliable (in the long run) than the V-8 designs offered by Ford & GM -- partly due to the fact that the Cummins has a whole heckuva lot less parts. For me, it came down to GM vs. Dodge. Ford wasn't even a factor. Had a friend that bought the new ford diesel. He's getting 8 mpg empty -- stock! The ride is definitely rougher on the Dodge, but not as unbearable as it was on my '92 Dodge Diesel. Either one should be good! Oh, and the only reason long-term reliability mattered was because I'm planning on keeping the truck for 10-15 years. If I was trading every few years, I'd be tempted to get a Duramax.

Cummins or Duramax. The Ford diesel right now is a flop. There is rumor of another new diesel from ford next year, so.......

To be honest, I would go with the best warranty and the best price. These diesels will pull any camper, no problem. I am looking at some now, and it is tough to find a 3500 SRW CC, long box. It just seems you can't get what you really want anymore. Dodge is offering dealer pricing. These deals will just get better after next week because of the auto show. Roughly a $50K truck for $35K. Anyone else see any good prices??
