Torque Converter Failure

Is this a common problem?

I have not really heard to much about TC failure.

My mechanic and I have ruled out everything else.

I just have a hard time believing it though.

Anyone else ever experience this?

Thanks!!

there is a stator in your converter.. with a one way clutch on it... this can go bad... either lock up or free spin.. the stator is used for torque multiplcation on a start when it locks.. and free spins at high speeds... if its locked up.. it will cause drag... and if it spins both ways.. you will have alot less torque on a start up... not much else can go bad in a converter really.

Yeah that is interesting , did you have any symptoms before the T/C failed ? When i'm cruising @ highway speed (50-60 mph) the truck will all of a sudden feel like i hit a 'rumble' strip and it will last for quite some time until i either let off or apply the throttle, The other thing that stops it is when i hit the 'tow/haul' button while in the middle of the shake. I hope a filter/oil change may help and maybe get some friction modifier in there.

I think maybe it might be the end for my T/C as well , I was just wondering if this kind of thing happened to you as well before the demise . :D

Yes the rumble effect is a classic TC failure!

I was losing 4th gear and going into a safe mode. Then it started running really rough, almost dying when coming to a stop, rough idle and I could feel the TC start slipping the last of the week.

New TC is in and problem is gone.

One question: there was a sticker on the old converter that said remanufactured by GM, is this common? I dont believe the tranny has ever been out either.
