Removing Muffler

I have Flowmaster 40 series delta flow single in/single out on my 99 sierra 5.3L now and it seemes to make my top end power weaker, decreased my mpgs, drones bad inside the cab at highway speeds and isnt producing the loudness I want it to on the outside. I did add a cold air intake but that didnt help much with sound. I was thinking of cutting off the muffler and welding in a straight pipe. I was wondering how good will this sound. I definatly want it louder, but DONT want to be able to wake the dead, so will it be crazy loud? and loud at highway speeds? and will I loose power? thanks

flowmasters delta 40 isnt loud enough for you? Thats the loudest one they make! Ive got one and it isnt far off from a glasspack. a 40 flowmaster is about 7/8s of the way to waking the dead.

It will be loud, but it won't be crazy loud if you still have the cat. converter intact.

It will be loud on the highway, but it will hopefully get rid of the drone.

You should not loose any power. I definitely did not when I got my Dynomax Bullet muffler, which is completely straight through. I have the old 5.7L engine, your 5.3L might be different.

Try the 20series, its loud

10 series  Those are the only Blowmasters I would consider running on my truck.

The drone will be even worse with a straight pipe. We used to do worst case drone acoustics testing, which involved using a straight pipe. You are getting the raw low frequency from the motor, with no attenuation whatsoever.

thanx for your input. How do you like your dynomax bullet? how round and long did you go with?

thanks 4 the info.

Love it. I got the 12" long one with 3" diameter piping.

My cab doesn't resonate at all to my exhaust.

That is a good point. Resonance is in the "ear of the beholder". We used OE specs for resonance, which is under 80dB at cruising speed. I know that I would not survive long with a straight pipe, even with aspirin. As long as you have the setup you like, that's great!

I have a 2005 1500 with the 5.3 and have straight pipes. I have dual 3" pipes straight out the back with 3.5" tips. Great sound, very deep and throaty all the way through the rpm range. I have had this exact system on my 2003 with the 5.3L and on my 94 with the 5.7 350. I still have the 94 and am running that exact same system on it as well. 3" straight pipes will talk to ya, very loud but also very good sound, not just obnoxious.

So a single straight should be a little queiter than straight duals not, and in your opinion do you think your straights drone any worse than high flow muffler combos at highway speeds, and did you notice any loss in lowend power? thanx

I use to run straight pipes on my truck. it was fun for a while but it was to loud. for example this winter it was down to -40 and -50 and my truck would be honest to god snapping off just idleing for like 5 min haha. currently i run 24inch flo pro straight through glasspacks installed backwards. those will basically be as loud as you want and have a decent rumble driving normally. I've got yelled at a few times with my glasspacks haha.

I have a 90 ford 302 pickup with no muffler just straight pipe. BUT it still has the stock two catalytic converters .At least I think they are both catalytic converters. (Both are mounted after the junction of the exhaust manifold pipes.)Anyways the truck is not that loud and has no drone to speak of.http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=94154&st=0&gopid=919679
