Muffler Diameter And Offset

First, if I have read all the recent searches correctly my 5.3l has an inlet of 3' and an outlet of 2.75 (2 3/4). Is that right?

What are the positions of the pipes? If I'm not mistaken it's offset in, center out? Or the other way around?

Last is, I'm looking at getting the Corsa black muffler that khester put in his truck and I just wanted to get one more reassurance from everyone. The inlet and outlet on this muffler are both 2.5', meaning one is 1/2 smaller on one end and 1/4 smaller on the other. Is their a downside to having a smaller inlet if the muffler is a staight through design like the Corsa is? I know intially smaller would equte to more back pressure but with the straight through design, I wasnt sure if the issue was as black and white.

Thanks!

for truck will be fine. it wont flow or sound as good as it could. my recomendation is to go 3 in 3 out. the truck will breath better. but it will be alright.

To go 3 in and 3 out I would need a different muffler all together.

GMT900's have 3" all the way to the tip where it decreases to 2.75". You want a 3" in and 3" out muffler. However, if you plan on going with the Corsa DB series you want the 2.5" in 2.5" out verison. You will probably need two 2.5" to 3" exhaust reducers. You add a muffler for sound mainly. Very minimal power gains and only at higher rpms. If the Corsa DB is the sound you want then don't worry about the smaller inlet and outlet vs the stock pipe.

Yea, I wasn't concerned about any gains just loss. I never install a muffler with the expectation that my truck will preform 5% better or some random assumption, merely that I will get the tone that I desire.

I was told that the muffler shop would be able to heat up the muffler or inlet/outlet pipes to make them fit accordingly, does the make sense? I'm not one for welding or any type of metal work so my knowledge is limited. Does it make more sense to do it one way over another?

My only worry was that the size reductions would implicate a hit on my performance, not a gain in anyway.

Thanks for the reply BTW!

*bump*

Last bump, don't worry.

I really want to get some more down to earth answers like Ryan's.

As soon as that's the case I'm buying it!

I'm assuming the Corsa muffler has a small pipe where the inlet and outlet are located on the muffler itself. The shop could slide the 2.5" inside the 3" of the stock piping and weld. Most likely what will happen. They could also flare the 2.5" head pipe on the muffler inlet and outlet to make it larger to mate with the 3" factory pipe. It should be no problem for a muffler shop. The Corsa muffler should be able to flow much more CFM that your engine can push.

Flare, that's what they said!

So all and all this will be a positive change all the way around?

Muffler guy told me that the 3 in flows better so go with 3 but he'd still make the 2.75 fit if i wanted it.

If I can get my video function tonight or if I can get a buddy of mine to get some video of my truck I put the Corsa DB Black on my truck and it sounds great on the highway and it also sounds good when in town...just like they advertise no drone on the highway untill you get into the powerband during a downshift or passing a car. On my truck my muffler man flared the muffler tips so that they would fit the stock exhaust and weled it in for $20.00 I paid 170.00 for the muffler so I feel that it is a good deal for what I wanted I will get some video sent to ya this weekend.

What did he do about the fact the inlet and outlet are opposite of the inlet and outet of the muffler? You know, truck is center in and offset out where the muffler is offset in and center out?

I would love the vids.

And 3' isn't an option for the one that stated it, they don't make them in 3'.

These engines like a "little" bit of back-pressure. Has long as you stay 3" in and single 3" out you should be fine.

It will be 3" down to 2.5" in and then 2.5" to 3" out (single). The muffler is 2.5" both sides, no way to get 3". But the pipes stay 3" except for entering and exiting the muffler.
