Newbie Question #2

Trying to learn here folks!

In NASCAR there are points awarded for leading a lap.  In order to get these points, what exactly do you have to do?  Obviously, lead a lap, but what does that mean? How is "lead a lap" judged?  Get the lead, get to the starting line and lead around to the start line or is it from the point you take the lead, around the track and back to the same point?

If you cross the start/finish (and only the start/finish line) one time as the leader, then you've earned 5 bonus points for that race.  As an example, if you were in second place and passed the leader going into turn 1 and took the lead, but the other driver passes you going in to turn 3 and keeps it until he crosses the line, then you did not lead a lap.  If you lead teh most out of the entire race, you get 5 more.  That's the only bonus points available in NASCAR racing.

Hope this helps.

to add what Mountaineertom said. The "Most laps  lead" bonus can only be awarded to ONE driver. All 43 cars can get  the lap leader bonus, but only one can get most laps led. If you lead the wole half of the race plus 1 lap, you've clinched it, nobody else can get as many or more laps led .

I did know about total laps I was just wondering about the leading one lap..and I am still a little confused...lets say I am second going into turn 4.  I then take the lead from Fraley in the TeamAirForce car.  All I have to do is cross the start/finish line to lead a lap? I dont have to actually lead an entire lap in distance, just at some point during the race cross the line in first no matter where I gained the lead?

Your exactly right!  You don't need to lead the entire lap.

It may take yo few laps to get around me though:biggrin: if I don't wreck us both first though.

Right.

It doesn't count anywhere else but at the line.

Here's a scenairio for you:

It's the last lap and Tom's lead EVERY  lap until then.

His engine let's go right as he crosses the line comming to the white flag, You run second, I'm right  on your bumper in 3rd. Tom drops to the aprin and let's us by. So you're in the lead by the time we get to turn #2, I'm right on your tail. You hold me off on the backstretch and  turns 3 & 4. But comming out of 4 I get into the back of you and spin you out and you back into the wall . I go on to take the checkered flag. You don't even get the five pints for leading cause you didn't lead  where it counted.

Dont worry Tom, I'll be Waltrip to your Junior.....I'll just cover and just stay out of the way (be holding The General Lee off for you!)

LOL.  Good description Jeremy.  Now if some one asked you two what happened there's two stories.

You would say that he wrecked you, and he would say he just "loosened" you up a little bit and you lost control.    And I wouldn't care because my motor blew up after dominating the race!

Yeah, Tom will be in his Airforce Chevrolet cursing his car out.

I'll be in the BSA Chevy, doing donuts in the grass.

And you, Newbie, will be getting out of your "Let Newbie into the Admin. Zone" Chevy, running to victory lane with your fists clentched ready to kick my a$$.

Well, if thats gonna be the name of my car I'm going to have to be racing a STATION WAGON so it will fit on the side.....! Of course I will have the gmtrucks.com sticker on the dash so everyone can see it when the camera's on......  "NBC and GMTC....more than just racing.......join NewbieZ71 after the race on his new show..."The Admin Zone"....."  of course, since I crashed, I will have to hit a couple of writers first.......

You guys are having way to much fun.  It's good to see someone wanting to learn a little about racing.  I would have posted replies but I very seldom log on on the weekend.  I am on the net all week at work so the weekends are usually net free.  Jeremy, if newbie's car can even move after YOU pulled an Earnhardt on him then he will pull a Cole Trickle and get four new tires and come out and demolish your car while you are trying to be cool and doing donuts.

Knowing my luck, Newbie would hit the gas and slide down and hit me before I could get around him, and we both would be out of contention and we'd fight like the "Allison vs. Yarborough" incident At Daytona in '79.

And I'll keep my helmet on.

Well with you three out then that would leave me to go for the win.  That was smart driving on my part.  Sitting back waiting knowing tom was driving to hard and he would eventually blow and you two where batteling to much so I just waited and pounced when it counted.  Thanks becasue I was going for the extra Million.  And it just so happened that my wife was the special fan to get a million as well. biggrinhat.gif
