Did I Blow The Rear End?

yesterday i noticed that when i turned sharp at low speeds the rear end would knock. I figured it was time to clean it out and put in new lube (2000 rcsb 4.8 3.42 rear, 57000km). but just before i got it home i turned the last corner and it just spun, made a bad clicking/knocking sound and revs wents funny. it now goes nowhere and makes a wierd sound when i try to put it in drive,3,2,1 or reverse. any thoughts on it and how much to fix? thanks

Sounds like you blew the sun shell. Time for a rebuild, or a new tranny.

but the problem sounds like its in the diff, tranny still pulls hard, always has

i thought i might have turned my ring gear into a ring pulley

mmmm.. put it on jackstands... throw it in drive.. and see if the driveshaft spins.. and the wheels should go nowhere if you broke big time in the diff. imma say the trans prolly let go but... i cant hear it so.. check that.. or simply pull the cover on the diff.. see if metal comes fallin out.

How can the tranny still pull hard if its sitting on the side of the road? It could be a number of things that went, many diff parts, and many trans parts. Could be side or spider gears, ring or pinion gears, snapped axle, output shaft. Way too much to list, but get it home and jack it up. You will have an idea soon enough.

Is it 4wd? If so, put it in 4 wheel and see if it moves. If it does, pull the rear driveshaft, and drive home carefully.

There could be several factors that could be the cause. As some one already mentioned, you may have to put the rear end up on stands and see if the drive shaft moves. If it does, you probably blew the spider gears, or worse destroyed the ring/pinion. If it doesn't turn, look towards the sun shell.
