Power Steering Pump Repair

Ape0r

Question

Posted

The power steering pump on my '04 5.3L Silverado looks to be leaking badly on the pulley shaft seal. I looked around gmpartsdirect, and saw that they sell various seal kits and such. Is there any way to tell if I need to replace the whole pump, or can I just rebuild it with a new seal kit?

Any advice is very much appreciated!

just loose the fan shroud and fan, pull off the pulley ,replace the seal only and reassemble ,special tool to pull the pulley and reinstall, parts store may have it,watch where the pulley is on the shaft and put it back in the same place have fun ( I usually put a small screw in the old seal with 1/4 " air rachet and use side cutters to pry out the seal using the screw)

had to replace mine at 55,000. I just got a whole new pump (reman) for 140.00 and it was done. Not hard at all, parts place will lend you the puller.

I put in synthetic fluid afterward and drained out all the other old fluid. How? fill the PS unit up to the top, disconnect the return line on the hydro boost unit and attach a hose to drain into a drain pan. Pump the brakes and the fluid will drain from the hydro boost unit into the pan, keep filling up the PS until you go through a whole bottle of PS synthetic fluid. It's been 25,000 since repair and all is good.
