01z71 Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 I have a '98 Z-71 with the 5.7L and the 3.42 locking rear end. I went to pull out of a parking spot and the truck wouldn't go so I gave it some gas and the rear end made a bang and the truck started to move. The truck drove fine afterwards but I changed the rear differential fluid and the magnet was caked in metal debris. Normally, the magnet just has a little fuzz on it but this time it was loaded with metal shavings. It isn't making any noise but what should I expect. The truck has 173,000 miles and I am running Amsoil 75W90 Severe Service Gear Oil. Any thoughts??
01z71 Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 I did and the magnet was covered in fuzz all over and it was a lot of metal fuzz.
tenntoby Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Sounds like the limited slip unit let go.You could jack both rear wheels off the ground and give one wheel a good spin,if the other wheel does'nt try to engage and spiin the same direction, unit failure.
01z71 Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 So, if the limited slip unit went out will this affect the everyday use of the truck other than not having the benefit of limited slip? I am just wanting to make sure it doesn't go out on me in the middle of no where and leave me stranded lol Thanks
01z71 Posted April 10, 2009 Author Posted April 10, 2009 TTT So, would the limited slip going out affect the everyday driveablilty?? Other than not having the limited slip? Thanks Guys
