1999 Yukon Cv Boot Replacement

Recommended Posts

The Front, passenger, outer CV Joint Boot on my 1999 Yukon is split and leaking grease... Question.

How hard are these to replace?

Any special tools needed?

If I am there, should I replace other parts?

Any on-line instructions?

Thx

Not hard to replace at all, you don't even have to remove the tire, get you a service manual to walk you through it , but in a nut shell, remove the center cap from the wheel and remove the large nut in the middle (seems like its a 22mm, but I may be wrong) and unbolt the small bolts from the Diff.

At that point you can work the complete Cv axle out from underneath and out the front, once you get it out its simply a matter of seperating the inner and outer from each other and changing out the boot.

Its been over a year since I did it but if I remember right it only took me about an hour total.

I'm pretty sure the 99 is the same as the 03 that I have, now my sons 95 K1500 with a 6" lift was a different story, its harder to remove the axles on the older style trucks, I did both sides and it took about 4 hours.

The boot repair kit is like 25 bucks plus and 1 - 2 hours of your time. You can buy a new cv shaft for about 70 bucks.

At 25 bucks to replace a boot, and 70 for the shaft I think I might just go with the shaft. Is this the same as the "Half Shaft" and does it, as it looks in pictures, include both joints + axle + boots? if so it does not even seem like it is worth tryting to monkey on the new boot....

Thx

New half shaft ALL THE WAY! If the boot is torn, there is dirt/grit in the cv joint doing damage. Half shaft should come with everything you need. You MAY need the nut for the outside but IIRC mine came with a new one. Be careful though, the first one I got for my 01 Tahoe did not line up properly. Turns out mine was from an 00 instead. Fortunately I was near Napa and got a replacement halfway through.

Good Luck.

Reading through some instructions I found for replacing the boots... man it seams like it would be a lot harder to replace the boot (cut the clamp off, pull the SOB apart, blah blah blah!!

Thanks for the input, got to love these forums for making life easier... I am sure I would have gone in and replaced the boots only to swear by way through the whole thing...

On my truck it's a 36mm

I went with just replacing the Boot on mine, it was not that hard and its been 30K miles os so ago with no problems.

But if you are going to replace the Half Shaft, pay a few dollars more for a new one instead of a remanufactured one and you will get a lifetime waranty.
