K1500 Timing Issues-need Some Help.

I have an 89 K1500 with a carbed 350 crate motor. My problem is when i converted the engine to carb and changed to hei distributor the timing marks and the crank dont line up. I know this could be solved by purchasing a new pulley but to be quite honest i do not have the time or money being i am layed off from strip job. I have played with the timing for a month now and just cant seem to get it right. Its always too slow or too fast. I was wondering if you guys know a way to time the engine without marks and get it right. It also has a hesitation when i just throw the fuel to it which i think is a timing issue but again i am use to fuel injection. Could you guys please help me out on this one. Thanks Alot.

When you put the HEI in, are you sure you got in in correct? It is very easy to get it in one tooth off. That would explain the timing marks off. Is it a Q-jet carb your using? The acc pump in them get weak. that would explain the hesiation.

+1,you have the dist. off a tooth or two & the acc. pump needs a new seal?
