How do you set the timing on a 2000 chevy 5.7L motor ? my son has a k2500 and off and on it sometimes feels like it bucks on him i think he said around 40mph anyhow he had some time and took it in the shop and hooked up the computer it said his timing was off by 16deg. he isn't sure as how or what would make this that far off and how to set it right does it need to be at the right rpm when he checks the timing or just at idle ? other then the bucking off and on it seems to run pretty most of the time. any help would be great and thanks alot .

timing is computer controlled. you need a scanner to check and set.

He has the use of a snap-on scanner thats how he found it was off and was throwing acode but from there how do you set it ?

Well if it is possible to set the timing, then this information would be in a factory service manual set (order from GM dealer). For my 92, basically this would not need to be set so long as no one messed with the distributor.

But the timing information for my truck is in the factory fuel and emissions book, the main service manual, and on a sticker under the hood (need all 3). To set this on my vehicle, you would need to do certain things to the computer and this is different depending on engine/transmission, etc. The books have pages and pages of "if you have this engine, do this". "If you have that engine, do that", etc.

But again, if no one has messed with my distributor, I'm not going to touch it, I'm going to check the computer sensors as the input from these is what adjusts the timing.

As to your vehicle, do you have a distributor? Or it is that individual coil on each spark plug business? (If individual coils, then I would not imagine there would be anything to adjust? I don't know?)

If you have a distributor, then the information about this would be in the ignition section in the fuel and emission book (engine computer stuff) and in the general service manual - electrical/ignition/distributor replacement, then the label under the hood.

This is going by my 92 books. I don't know if this would be the same for your vehicle or not? You would need to order and read those books.
