Rust!

Hey everybody, I noticed today that a couple of spots were getting worse, gotta love those NY winters. Is there any thing I can do short of taking it to a shop to stop the worsening rust? Any type of spray or anything?

Unfortunatly, you will have to get the hood painted within a paint-shop. To avoid bad expense like this, you should install a deflector in front to deflect little rocks and avoid at all price to follow huge trucks (keep a reasonable distance)

Eastwood makes a product called Rust Encapsulator that will pretty much stop the rusting process by preventing oxygen from getting to the metal. To use this product you need to remove any loose rust and clean the surface and then you just spray or brush the Rust Encapsulator over the rusted area. This product comes in different colors and can be top coated. Remember that the rust may be coming from the backside of the metal and if you only coat the top side the rusting process will continue. Eastwood also makes a product that converts the iron oxide (rust) to a zinc sulfide to eliminate the rust and then you can prime and paint the metal as usual.

That's what I was wondering? I had to re-read the OP to see if I missed something.

Where is the rust, and is it just on the surface, or is it actual rot?

 

If it's rot, you're shit out of luck, the only thing you can do is cut out the bad metal, and weld in new metal. Surface rust can be ground down, and painted over.

Depending on where the rust is you could use different products. If it is on the body and you want the color to somewhat match you will need to sand down the area to remove all the rust, then paint over it. Get on it as soon as possible, if you wait longer the rust will be harder to remove as it embeds deeper into the surface.

 

If it is something more hidden (underneath vehicle) I would probably use a rust paint like Rustoleum. I painted my hitch and ball with this so it wouldn't rust. I was damn lucky when I bought it because it was 1 cent at Autozone, no price tag with it. Figured it was the cheapest there. Has worked great so far.

Thanks guys for the info. I also re-read my own post looking for "hood" in it. The rust isn't rot, thank god, Just a couple spots where rust is starting to show. I had some work done and I think they bondo it and the rust seems to be "bubbling" from it. The truck is almost 10 yrs old and I have work the chit out of it. It's has been taken care of though, wash/waxing, syn oil changes regularly, and a bunch of other maintenance/care. I just don't want to see it turn into a rust bucket
