Gmc 2000 Yukon Xl

Hi,

Shocks on the Yukon are shot. They are starting to leak, but at 150K they should be changed. I was wondering how easy it is to change and if there is a DIY somewhere. Also what do people recommend.

Greatly appreciated,

This is a very easy job that you can do yourself. The only tricky part is the top rod on the front shocks will likely turn when you try to loosen the nut. Simply hold the top of the rod with a pair of vice grips while loosening the nut. You will notice the very top of the rod is squared off just so you can hold it.

There are a lot of Bilstien fans here and they are great shocks. However, I personally like KYB. If you do no towing at all, go with their Gas a Just, we (CARQUEST) call them Performance Plus under the CQ brand. (KYB is our supplier). If you tow, go with the Mono Max series.

You do need to make sure you do not have the AutoRide option which I am not sure was avail in 2000. This is the computer controlled air shock system. If you do not have Auto Ride, you also need to make sure you do not have the Premium Smooth Ride Option. I have this on my 02 Yuk XL but I am not sure it was avail in 2000. This is a very high pres. self leveling shock that is about the size of a small tree trunk. If you have this option you can only go back with these units. They are supplied to GM by Sachs and are very very expensive. We offer them in KYB but they are repackaged Sachs units.

If you have neither of these options, you are good to go and can use the Gas a just or the Mono Max depending on your needs.

If you are planning to keep the truck, I would suggest you steer away from Gabriel or Monroe. Not bad units but they are not in the league with KYB or Bilstien in quality or engineering.

I have an 00 Suburban, and I just replaced my factory shocks at 135k, I used the Bilstein HD's great ride.

I just missed the buy 3 get 1 sale at Summit, I bought mine off Ebay, shipped for $220.

I think the seller was thepartsladi, somewhere in FL.

It is just the rear I would be changing? Would it be okay to have OEM in front and AM in the back, as in the factory shock absorbers in the front and rear shock absorbers that are aftermarket in the rear?

Thanks so far for your input.

WOW!

150K on ORIGINAL shocks? Those darn things are usually completely shot at 30K if you're lucky. I bet the difference with new ones is going to be HUGE.

You'll have to let us know how that goes.
