Leds In Overhead Console

I was thinking about putting in some white LEDs in my overhead console. I got the idea from my neighbor's new Malibua. They will shine down where the cupholders are. I have seen people put them in there but I would rather not. My biggest thing is that I don't want to see them shining in my eye. The ones in the Malibua do not do this. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

I have a set of blue ones in mine, they look fantastic at night...got them off ebay for like $10 a set shipped. I have had these in for a year without any problems. They are shaped just like the fuse type bulbs, just pop yours out and pop these in...very simple.

THREAD JACK WARNING ...but,

 

I have to comment on this because I saw it yesterday on a GMC and it bugs the shz out of me.

 

If you are going to put in LED tail lights, then you must also swap out your cabin light as well. It looks funny/bad when you press your brakes and the cabin light is different then the tail lights...your eyes draw to the cabin light.

 

Do them all, or not all all.

There are two led that are in the tiny circles to the outside of the console. I'm not talking about the map lights. They shine on the center console dimmly but enough to light it up and see everything.

I know what your talking about bud, "ambient lighting", I have an 08 Malibu and it does look good. All you need really is to get LEDs that are similar in color to the ones in your interior, the hardest part is to recess them so they only shine down and light specific areas.

I have an '08 Honda Civic that came with this blue LED ambient lighting. Find this to be a very nice feature. Just an observation from the Honda design, they shine the light through use a very small lens opening (maybe 1/8") straight downward. This is sufficient to wash the entire shift console without glare or reflections off the chrome trim.

Yeah exactly. I think it looks awesome in the car. Just need to figure out a way to put them in so there is no glare like stated.

Go to Radio Shack. They have drawers full of LED lights and holders of different sizes. That should help you install the LED lights so that they are aimed correctly.

I know what your talking about, my wifes HHR has that and it shines down on the controls/shifter...kinda lights up the chrome rings on the knobs.

 

Problem is on my wifes car the led is recessed so the "eye" doesnt catch it and it focuses the light where its needed. If you can manage to to have it recessed it will be nice.

I will check them out. I think I will have to do some fiberglassing to make them sit in there recessed.

If you do manage to figure it out keep us updated, I think it will be a nice mod. The key will be to recess them though!

at radio shack they have a "holder" for the led's, that fits in a 1/4" hole, but that wouldn't be totally recessed
