I decided to do my own version of a custom intake scoop.

Parts List from AutoZone:

3 - 3" Intake Duct Mounting Plates

1 - 3" Black Air Duct (28" long)

2 - 3" Hose Clamps

Parts List from Home Depot & Lowes:

8 - 3/8" bolts (1 1/2" long) w/ nuts, lock & flat washers

1 - 3" Hole Saw (this sting was expensive!)

1 - Kitchen Sink Wire Strainer

1 - Rattle Can Rustoleum Black

I started out by taking out the plastic cover behind the passenger tow-hook, cutting off the fins on the backside, and drilled a 3" hole for the tube & 4 3/8 holes for the mounting plate.

I spray painted the bolts & wire strainer, then put them on the cover.

I used a Sharpie to outline the bottom of the airbox that's exposed on the underside and then drilled a 3" hole on the underside of the air box & test fitted it.

I put 2 mounting plates on top of each other and marked on the airbox where to drill the new holes.

Then I installed the tube on the underside of the airbox using a clamp.

I put the cover back behind the tow hook and slid the tube over the plate and secured it with another clamp.

Here's a picture looking up towards the underside of the airbox.

Here's an underside view of the cover with the secured tube.

Finally the view from the front of the truck look at the scoop with the screen.

In addition to the custom scoop, I also added a AEM DryFlow Panel Filter.

I hated the stock intake tube so I also replaced that with an Airaid Modular Intake Tube (MIT), no wonder air had difficulty getting into the throttle body.

Finished view of the engine bay.

All I can say is...:uhoh::lol::D:D

Awesome man! Great pics and description of parts and instructions! I like that Air Raid replacement. Didn't know there was one like that. I was told though that that stock intake with the ugly air pocket growths were for air expansion areas for when under hard acceleration at high speed to quick de-acceleration the rush of air coming in had somewhere to go. Not sure if that was something we had to worry about. :loser: What do you think or know about that?

i heard that pocket thing was a resonator for low noise at certain RPM's probably highway speeds.

is the advantage of that scoop just the cold air?, or just the badassness :troll:

You did a great job on buiding your ram air. :troll:

I just cleaned my TB today and was looking at the intake tube and thinking how restictive it was.......The Airaid Modular Intake Tube is a nice piece but they are 149.99 - thats a lot of $$ just for a plastic tube.

Anyone know where to pick one up a little cheaper or another maker ??

I checked C&L and they only have Fords......Im not big on Chevy performance shops so any help would be apprieciated.

I got my MIT for $104 from TruckAddons (they price matched partsshowroom.com's price)

How do you have time to do all this with the new baby? :troll:

Very cool man, that's a lot of work!

Good work. I'm doing this project this weekend.

Why did you choose 3" for the tube? Is that the biggest that would work or was there another reason? The parts that you bought from Autozone were found on the shelf, or behind the counter?

Thanks for the info

You know that whole "sleep with the baby sleeps" saying? I just altered it to "mod when the baby sleeps" :)

3" is just how big the mounting plates & tube was. Everything was found on the shelf by the Spectre cold air intake systems.

On the note of cold air intake systems, I've done a little searching and found some discussion on the cold air AND also a HOT air intake system. Been reading that Cold air intake systems increase power, and HOT air intake systems increase fuel MPG.

Here's the lengthy topic, 34 pages long. Not sure who wants to read that much but, worth reading for those interested in fuel economy!
