Bark??

What is this bark noise I hear when moving from a dead stop in drive? Sometimes you hear it sometimes you don't. Sounds like it is coming from the drive shaft. Definately not a clunk. What ever it is sounds like it needs to be lubed/replaced.

 

U-joints? Slipe Yoke?

Slip yoke. Definitely slip yoke. As it gets worse you will hear it both right before coming to a dead stop and as you take off.

Ok, so what do I replace it with this week? First it is nickel plated yoke then it is not. I just took a look and there is definately some wear around it.

 

Is there a bearing kit or something I'll need as well coming out of the transfere case?

 

What about changing the fluid in the transfere case (or just adding some)? The transfere case seems to have been leaking but none of it ever hit the ground. T-case is all oily looking.

 

I'm thinking that if the Yoke is showing signs of wear then I need to replace the yoke, fix the bearing and seal, and change /add more fluid.

Yeah, it is like the Griswolds, I left the dog tied to the back and all there is left is a frayed off leash!!!!

You should be able to just lube the slip yoke and get rid of the noise. This will require the transfer case fluid to be changed.

I had that bark on a '98 Yukon, I tightened the nuts on the u-bolts that hold the springs to the rear end and the noise went away.

Going back in tomorrow for a re-torque on my suspension. I'll let them know about it and see if that fixes it.

I have the same noise on my 2000...let me know if you find the fix. I am going to check my slip yoke ASAP now....

Just got back and all is fine.

 

The noise is actually axle wrap.

 

Quadrasteer, you would be the winner. Tightening the axle u-bolts my help. Mine were just re-torqued but it didn't help much. Going with the lift actually increases axle wrap as the axle gets further away from the springs. I can either live with the sound or I can buy the traction bars. The guy at the garage told me his does it and his fix is the radio!

I had a 2000 Silverado with the same problem. I had them fix it once and it did not work. The second time they told me it could not be fixed. I then got in touch with GM and they made an appointment for me at my local dealership and they replaced the yoke with a new nickel plated one, this was all under warranty. After the replacement it was silent, with a much better ride. If you complain enough they should replace it. I have a friend at the dealership and a memo went around back in 2000 stating that GM had a problem with the yokes. Good luck.

whys that? I replaced my u joints a few weeks ago and relubed the yoke (huge improvement). Didnt have to change my t case fluid ( I changed it about 2 months prior.) The TSB said to change the T case fluid because in the early model yr trucks they had the red t case fluid. The fluid change was to put in the new autotrac II fluid.
