2006 Gmc Sierra Crew Cab Slt Turn On Tpms

I read in the full size truck forums that TPMS could be turned on if the sensors were added to the tires on a non TPMS truck. I bought sensors, had them installed, called a Chevy dealer and had him verify that this could be done. I brought it in and he had no luck. He said that sometimes GM holds codes and only gives them to aftermarket suppliers. He gave me the number to a tire shop. It does not sound like they will be able to do it. Can the system be turned on and where should I go to get it done?? Is there any chance a GMC dealer would have better luck than a Chevy dealer since the truck is a GMC?

Thanks,

Im interested in how this turns out. I was under the impression that if it did not have the RPO code(UJ6) it could not be done... maybe a diffrent PDM number controling it.

I'm 100% sure that a tire shop could not do it because, if its possible the PDM(controls the RKE and TPMS on that particular truck) would have to be programmed/enabled/setup(possibly replaced).

All I can find on Dealerworld SI is an enable procedure that explains that from the plant replacement PDMs have the TPMS disabled and have to be setup/enabled with the Tech2... Wish I had one I could try it on to let you know.

Edit: After reading the Decription an operation of the system this seems less and less likely to work. PCM, BCM, IPC and PDM/RCDLR all have their part in the operation of the system and I'm not sure how they integrate with just an TPM enable.

I'm not discourageing you from going to your dealer and having them think it over or call techline to see if its possible. If I had access to one without TPM I would still try for you.

As far as the Chevy/GMC dealer questions... At the one I work at we take all GM cars in except Saabs/Saturns with little hesitation unless we are particularly busy.

Ok, so I tried a GMC dealership today, still failed. The reason I am told is that the VIN# does not contain the option therefore it is not allowing the tech 2 to turn it on. I am thinking of a couple of options to try. Is there any way to have this option added to my VIN#??? The other option is to get a PDM out of a vehicle that already has TPM enabled such as an escalade or denali, or tahoe, etc. and plug it in place of mine to see if that works, or to put my PDM into a vehicle that has tpms and bring it to a dealer and see if it can then be turned on and put back into my vehicle.....anyone have any thoughts on this?

If anyone here works for a dealer and can get a window module(tpms) and turn the tpms on in another truck and send it to me, I am willing to buy it and pay the shipping to see if this would work. Thanks in advance. This would be a window module for a 2006 sierra crew cab and I have the power folding signal mirrors so I would need the one with that option.

Thanks

I take it they tried to enable it and it failed? I wonder if they called Techline Customer Support Center(I ask mainly because there is an article about it in the "GM Techlink" magazine/leaflet about calling them to see if it was possible to add stuff similar to this, through VCI...50 extra dollar, cause you have to get an engineer to upload it... programming...fog lamps and axle rations were the focus but this is in the same league) and asked it it was possible?...

You could not just put one in that you got in the mail because RKE and TPMS would still have to be setup when installed.

I think its going to be impossible because the other modules(looking at the schematic for the system it communicates heavily with the IPC...the orange indicator on base models and the DIC and the orange indicator on the uplevel models) are not setup to communicate with it.

Don't happen to live in NC do you?

OK,

So to anyone here who will answer. I brought the truck to a GMC dealer who says that it can't be turned on because my VIN won't allow it since it did not come with that option however I do have all of the hardware for this to work. If you search PDM on here it appears that a few trucks got sold with TPM turned on in the PDM but did not have the sensors installed...which must have made GM block it from being turned on So..the question is, if I buy a PDM off of ebay from a 2004-2006 Denali that came std. with TPM what are the chances of it working?? This is in the Window Switch right??

Same BS I heard when I went to the dealer and asked him to do a VIN relearn on a nav radio i installed to replace a cd/radio. I was told that since my VIN didn't come with NAV from the factory it wouldn't work.  Took it to a non-GM mechanic who did the VIN relearn.  I think some GM mechanics just read what the computer tells them. Go to a different dealer.

Im not one of those... If I can't do something like that and can't find a doc on it, I'm right on the phone to TCSC because if they do not know right then, they will call back in a few hours and give me a definate answer. We do everything we can within limits.

Customer satisfaction is a big deal at the place I work though...

It works!!! I bought a PDM from a 2005 yukon, came with 2 nice new keyfobs, swapped them out, programmed the keyfobs, it displayed service tpms system, I did the learn procedure and now my tire pressures are displayed....so the trick is, if it can't be turned on, get a pdm with it already turned on. I came out cheaper than getting it programmed. 40 for the sensors and 35 for the pdm....I have a pdm for sale with keyfobs from a 2006 gmc sierra if anyone is interested.

 Good for you, glad you got it figured out.

Out of curiousity were the part numbers on your original part and the new part the same? What were the part numbers if you know and don't mind sharing?

I didn't check the part numbers but I can...I will have to pull it back apart because I broke the rear retaining clip when I reinstalled the pdm with the trim piece(cheap piece of plastic!!!)...however the pdms did have all of the same plugs and markings on them, however I did notice the yukon one said PDM w/RKA w/TPM and the one from my sierra did not have the w/TPM part, however, if you search PDM in all forums it appears that the part numbers were at one time the same for the SUVs and trucks. If I don't get to post the part numbers for some reason I would think you could verify that they were the same by taking the PDM out of a sierra and trying to turn TPMS on by installing it in a SUV and seeing if it worked. It will be the weekend before I get to pulling it back apart because I need to go to the dealer and order the piece that I broke. Can anyone possibly provide a diagram to the insides of a door panel so I can locate the part number for the plastic piece??

thanks
