OCI, not when but why?
Grumpy Bear replied to Grumpy Bear's topic in Maintenance, Oils/Fluids, Detailing & Rust Prevention
Iron Curve for above Information. (That is...same motor, same data. No cherry picking going on.) Declining slope of zone #1 of the wear curve. That is, the last graph of post above. Normalized in ppm/K miles Declining wear rate with an increasing TBN residual = improved power cylinder sealing. ALL motors need running in. Fact is, you can't avoid running in. You can work with it or against its best possible outcome but wear in or wear out it will. This curve is different for every unit and would be different for the same unit under different supervision and/or other lubrication choices in same supervision. -

OCI, not when but why?
Grumpy Bear replied to Grumpy Bear's topic in Maintenance, Oils/Fluids, Detailing & Rust Prevention
Thoughts about OCI by Data I bought this unit new. I had the dealership change the oil before it left the lot; 24 miles. Then again at 1,000 miles, 2,982 miles then 7,463 miles and upon the next interval at 11,250 miles, a number divisible by 3,750 miles, the severe schedule, I pulled the first UOA sample. The first data point in the graph. Since that first sample I have held the interval and the oil, down to the batch number, a constant. The blue line is the percentage of the VOA value and that number is one of my condemnation points. I'm not going to argue the validity of using TBN as a guide but I will explain the idea. There is a correlation between TBN v TAN v Wear metals. It's been studied to death. In this graph above wear metals are not normalized, they are cumulative. This is an important distinction as one can see that early on the increase in iron is LINEAR as acid value increases and base number decreases. At about the 60% retention rate (July) the rate of wear starts to increase, non-linear. And the rate per unit/time/hours/miles CONTINUES to increase until the TBN reaches about 1 mg/KOH/g. At which point the rate is nearly vertical. That value is what the labs like Blackstone use as a condemnation point. Yea...that horse left the barn a few months ago. What they are saying is that keeping wear in check and linear is not important and it's okay to wear at an accelerated rate. Why I'm not going to argue that stupidity. What I am going to say is the for my equipment this is not acceptable. Okay, walked that dog long enough. Back to Graph 1. Wear metals (Iron) in the example motor is falling along a Power Curve with an R of 1, while TBN residual is rising quite along a linear path, also R near 1. (That graph is not shown). An impatient me would start increasing the OCI now seeing two equal and linear increased in residual and a perfect rate drop in iron as I have a definable pattern at this point. Problem with doing that right now is that it would uncouple wear rate from residual increase so the patient me will wait until one or the other flattens and decouples naturally. I hate missing an opportunity to learn something useful. This unit is now setting at 21,000 miles and still in the first box of the above studies to death wear pattern graph and this graph tells me that wear and TBN residual WILL decouple and when it does I will start lengthen the OCI and continue to monitor for the next two phases of wear. In box #1, the wear in, the OCI was short, very short and stayed short until wear RATE peaked, first 500 - 1,000 miles. The next few were short but increasingly longer settling on the OEM severe schedule as a base line. Have to start somewhere, an now riding the declining portion of that first phase. So couple of points. OCI isn't constant through a motors life, or shouldn't be. It isn't defined by normalization or statistical sets of data generated by the OEM or some University study trying to find Joe Average or some EPA requirement for waste. It isn't found by trail and ERROR. Lean from others mistakes, don't repeat them. I've said often. OCI is FOUND. *************************************************** You can not find your marks by trading oils or even batches of oils and you can't find them without points of reference. Yet EXPERTS with allot of letters behind their names have suggested to me that I should try oil XYZ and maybe ABC. That the OCI is to short and the TBN/TAN relationship is 'out dated' and "irrelevant" due to vast improvements in blah, blah, blah. Data says Otherwise There is a reason I'm Grumpy -
Groomer texts today and says I'd missed an appointment that morning for Rex. I begged forgiveness and told her that I was distracted with loosing a pet the previous day and wasn't quite myself. Actually this exchanged happened while driving and I had the Mrs. text her back with that response. She offered condolences and said if I got there right away she would fit him in OR she would schedule him in for this Wednesday at 9 A.M. This text I let the car read to us. I ask the wife to text her back asking for the Wednesday appointment. Wifey says, "What time?" "9 A.M." I reply. She asks, " How do you know she has a opening at that time, shouldn't you ask first?" "Oh I don't know dear...perhaps because she said 9 A.M.?" "No she didn't. Never mentioned a time" and shot the death stare at me. Puzzled I ask her to read the text chain back to me. She does and gets quite. I continue, "Not only did you just hear her when the car read the text, you read it to me just a few minutes ago.....".....I let that trail off into silence. We had just had this argument the night before about our cats medical condition. I heard the doctor say XYZ and she didn't and because she didn't....it didn't happen. I'm not telling this story to pick on my wife. She got the point right away and I had the text and the voice over to stand as witness. Everyone does this. I have the tapes and the emails. I'm not guessing about what I did or didn't hear or read. I'm not getting baited into having a conversation with a person I have ignored so I can be told what I have on tape wasn't said or implied. End of exchange....

Information is only useful if you get all of it. I got the 'what' was happening. Never go the 'WHY' it was happening. Then got sent down a dozen rabbit holes that had nothing to do with WHY. Prolonged the issue to failure and never, until today, get the WHY from another source. Rains coming? When? Where?

I imagine that at over 1K hp a stick would be suicide from many drivers today. They can back up without a camera or start a stick on hill or parallel park.

Pig Rich! When Dyson told me the 2400 ran "Pig Rich" as a cause for part of the fuel dilution issues and in addition tail pipes of a bunch of them concurred I was confused. Running monitored AFR's and LFT/STF readings didn't support that. As it turns out my eyes were not lying and neither was the tailpipe. Dyson's comment was just incomplete. Pig rich it is, but not during warm cycle driving. I learned something from a German Engineer friend recently. I was unaware that OEMS dump fuel during the cold start to preheat the catalyst system. Yea, burn fuel in the cat to get it hotter quicker. Cold enrichment well beyond that required for smooth cold starts. This is tied to the water temperature. For some vehicles this is accessible with programing (HP Tuners) and for others not. For those not there are means to trick the water temperature sensor with some interesting resistor arrangements. Can also be done with religious use of block heaters. Getting water temperature up about 20 C will trim enough fuel to kill bore killing over enrichment without interfering with cold starts. The latter method is even EPA/OEM friendly.

2025 C8 ZR1 "I think the Batmobile just passed us" say's da wife. It is jet black with paint deep enough to swim in. A few minutes later we pull into the Baxter street I-39 Shell station where we sit side by side with most drop dead gorgeous car I have ever seen. Mrs. is just giddy, "There it is, there is" she repeats like a sixteen year old at a Beatles concert. Fella is filling up and I ask as I get out smiling, "You get that signal in the sky tonight"? "What?" he smiles. "Wife said it looks like the Batmobile", and he breaks out in a roar. "Kid you not, my last name is Wayne". Pulls out his wallet and shows me. "Just rolled over 500 miles" he notes continuing "Just picked it up in Kentucky today and heading home, low serial number, first batch" adding "My fathers first name is John" with a sly giggle but he was serious about that too. We are all gaga as he goes inside to do whatever he's doing and hits the remote start on his way out bringing that thousand hp plus flat plane crank beast to life. It sounds like an Indy Car. I must have jump a foot. He and his Mrs' wish us well and drive off. We stand there a minute and watch him shorten the on ramp toward Wisconsin. 1,000 plus horsepower will do that. All the sudden I hear...."I was so excited I didn't get any pictures", horror in her face like she just missed a photo Op with Big Foot. "Then it never happened, did it, and this was just a dream". Truth doesn't need proof to be but for some it does to be believed. I don't need to prove it. I just wanted to enjoy it and kiddo's, we did. https://www.corvetteblogger.com/2025/01/25/video-first-2025-corvette-zr1-sells-for-3-7-million-at-barrett-jackson-scottsdale/

$7.08 per Gallon today in Germany. I have friends and family there. I'm feeling pretty good right now about my $3/$4 fuel.

Truth is where you find it! I would rather be hated for where I found truth than ignore it. I hope History is not off the table...... An ancient book states this scientific fact. "He stretches out the north over empty space, and hangs the earth on nothing". This was written about 1473 B.C.E., and that is noteworthy given the prevailing views or world scientist and philosophers of that time. They thought the world was flat and rest on this: It wouldn't be until the 17th century C.E. 1615 to be exact that an Italian would challenge that notion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_Galilei In the 3rd century BC, Hellenistic astronomy established the roughly spherical shape of Earth as a physical fact and calculated the Earth’s circumference. [quote Our Planet Today]. (Amazingly the calculation was quite accurate.) That same ancient book noted the earth 'circle' or Spherical shape around 732 B.C.E. When I look to hang my hat on a fact I expect it to be true and when I find out it isn't I change the way I think. Novel idea I know but that means at times I MUST change. Anything else is willful ignorance and frankly, stupidity of the worst kind. I would rather be hated for where I found truth than ignore it. The Bible is a great reference work I chose not to ignore.

You can and I can and that is the point. I don't have an issue with you. Actually I find some humor in it all. You notice who tags your post to me? Now that's funny.

I have a son who shares your attitude. Hates it when his mother counsels him from scripture. I tell him her faith isn't something she puts on like a dress. It's the air she breaths. Asking her not to is like asking a fish not to swim. Prejudice has a thousand faces. Me? Stupid is getting get old. Vindictive is getting old. Liars are getting really old. Stupid is knowing better and going head long anyway. We both have issues with people. You going to fix mine for me? I though not. Here's a hot tip for you if I bug you. DON'T READ WHAT I RIGHT. Block me. Ignore me. Change the channel! How hard can that be? Or are you trying to SAVE the world from me? Really? Get a grip.

Wasn't a religious comment was it? You're not the slow. Bible was used as a REFERENCE work just like one uses SAE documents or a dictionary or encyclopedia as references to validate points. Are you telling me you can quote Mechanics Illustrated or Better Homes and Gardens but the Bible off limits in a reference capacity? I can quote Herodotus but not Jesus? The Illinois State Penal Code on contract law in a Lemon Law Case but not the Bible on the same topic even though the state law is rooted in the Mosaic text? I'll accept the truth no matter where I find it. See how you three have bonded. Isn't that sweet.

Tell what is true Matthew 11:18,19 Likewise, John came neither eating nor drinking but people say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of man (Jesus) did come eating and drinking, but people say, ‘Look! A man who is a glutton and is given to drinking wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' All the same, wisdom is proved righteous by its works. And that is the real point of it, isn't it. "Wisdom" is proved "RIGHTeous" by it's results. What are the results seen in Pepper, Daisy, Mouse, The HX and Raven? What was the wisdom? (700,000 combine miles) What are the results seen in Dizzy? The Paseo? What was the wisdom? (600,000 combine miles)

Took a trip downstate yesterday and noticed that prices are the highest in the poorest counties. What's up with that?

Engine Failure - only 76,000 miles
Grumpy Bear replied to NC Chevy Owner's topic in Engines & Drivetrain
Yes Several parts of the motor are protected with such screens. VLOM, Oil pump, VVT solenoids, vacuum pump. The intention is to catch debris that would damage or interfere with that parts job. Problem is that they also are a collection point for varnish which is not a solid but 'plates out' over hundreds of heat/cool cycles from oils either not polar enough to hold them in solution or in oils run so long they fall out of solution. That is reach their saturation point. Either way, the screen plugs over time and whatever is downstream starves. -

Seemed worth repeating. Everything I said above that can not be done to a machine; can be done to a human. -

Amsoil for engine and tranny ?
Grumpy Bear replied to CSI-WALLEYE's topic in 2014-2018 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
I know this is an old post. Time is the YET in yet. In the 50's and 60's or my first 20 years on this planet I watched first hand relatives, dad and uncles, run motors on Group II oils of the period, Phillips Trop-Artic and Cen-Pe-Co to between 700K and 1 MILLION miles without issues and at end be as clean inside as the day they were built. Never stick a ring. Never rot a seal. The trick was the OCI. These were 500 to 1,000 mile OCI situations when oil was a quarter a quart and expectations were lower than a snakes belly in Death Valley. Have never seen a paraffin Group II do that at 2K OCI's. Oil, in general, isn't the issue....the OCI is. Matching the oil to the OCI is HUGE and it is also near impossible to do as the pressure from outside is so great and the human ego so fragile that doing what is needs instead of what your told is to heavy a burden to carry. Poor motors suffer our unwillingness to be sensible. If you are getting varnish color at your OCI it is to darn long. That isn't an opinion. Part of an oils job it CLEAN and if it can't keep it clean at your specific OCI shorten it or....don't. Neither of these are getting it done.- 34 replies
