  1. Pulling some info from WIKI so I don't butcher it. LOL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_dithiophosphate Zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP) Zinc dialkyldithiophosphates are a family of coordination compounds developed in the 1940s that feature zinc bound to the anion of a dialkyldithiophosphoric salt. These uncharged compounds are not salts. They are soluble in nonpolar solvents, and the longer-chain derivatives easily dissolve in mineral and synthetic oils used as lubricants. They come under CAS number 68649-42-3. In aftermarket oil additives, the percentage of ZDDP ranges approximately between 2 and 15%. Wikipedia (ZDTP) (Sorry I typoed this earlier) This guy will explain this better LSPI = Low speed Preignition Kind of unique to GDI motors. Calcium detergents in small displacement boosted motors at low RPM under high loads are primary targets. GM 2.7 in example. Also can be a problem for most any hard working low rpm GDI motor. Where did I learn it? Well that education started with my work experience with Big Oil starting with Getty. API school is something you were required to attend back in the day. As I worked for several, Chevron Research, Chevron USA, Conoco, Phillips, Gulf and Eastman Chemical in various roles, including lab rat, I was sent to allot of schools. Perhaps a third or more of my working life was in a classroom paid for by the before listed outfits. I am an avid reader and for a long while had access to SAE papers via Getty & Chevron Research and a few University Libraries. I kind of lived in them for a few years. Somewhat of an autodidact. Information sponge. Some people fish. LOL. This practice of Big Oil teaching is gone sadly as are Mustangs (A name people from this kind of teaching was given) I'm retired now and have been for some while. No more freebies. So I don't read as much as I have to buy it now. I still enjoy it. This craft is like medicine. You have to keep up with the journals to stay current. There's some stuff going on now that is mind blowing. And a bunch that is just opportunistic. I read enough to be useful to myself and share when I can. Call it a hobby now.
  2. [Quote] However, for those vehicles that are not affected by the recall, owners should not switch to the new 0W-40 oil spec. Using an engine oil viscosity other than what’s recommended by the manufacturer (in this case 0W-20 Dexos Gen 3) could void the vehicle’s warranty. This distinction is crucial. While GM has validated 0W-40 for use in select engines that pass inspection under the new recall, the decision is based on a targeted response to potential internal wear or tolerance variation and does not reflect a change to lubrication standards for all L87 engines. [Close quote] Yep, in a week since the NHTSA go hold of this they did a 'study' (has validated) ....really? Not! See that word in bold underline above? I want that fight. First off they don't spec the light oil anywhere in the world but North America and as the recall is world wide we are certain that the motor build is identical no matter where it is sold. The Magnuson-Moss Act places the burden of proof on the warranty holder, the OEM, not the buyer and it will cost you nothing unless you loose your claim and you won't if you don't lie. So don't lie. COULD is a word used to intimidate or bluff when they haven't a card to play. Almost everyone will fold and they know it. You also have recourse via lemon laws. That one you may have to pay for. Yea, most fold on that one too.
  3. Magnesium is an LSPI friendly substitute for Calcium. TBN's are very comparable. Add the Mg and Ca and you will see that it is nearly the same concentration as the Red Line HP calcium. Yes, the ZDDP package is a bit more robust. The CUMMINS Valvoline Restore 10W30 is a diesel oil developed for freeing stuck rings in the CUMMINS ISx15. Mg is a more efficient dispersant but about the same as a neutralizer. This value has zero impact on bearing wear. That region is hydrodynamic lubrication. It had nearly no impact on ring/liner wear either. Remember that ZDDP and ZDTP are also antioxidants. Lead and tin I discussed in the first post. Reduction in wear metals is viscosity generated. The silicon is an antifoam agent. Just a blenders choice on amount based on base oil foaming tendencies. Aluminum is mostly piston wear and identical. Copper is, in this case, oil cooler leaching. Slightly different reactivities. Neither seems to have much copper passivator. Those things not 'wear metals' are just variations in chosen chemistries, like Moly content. Did I cover it all?
  4. My world isn't the one in question and it wasn't a game. It was an honest question. Your sentence makes no sense TO ME. But fine, you don't want me to understand you... I'm good. There is no education in the second kick of a mule. You have a nice day.
  5. That in itself is interesting. Don't you think? You get a 5 year 60K warranty if using a 0W20 but a 10 year 150K warranty if you use 0W40 in a motor with issues? But will reject a warranty on 0W40 in a good motor. OMG these people are a hoot. Someone explain please what hook of assurance in GM engineering I can hang my hat on?
  6. Yes for real. Where does the dirty side originate and terminate? IT isn't a place You don't say what IT is or where IT is. You said: So if it vapors, and there are always vapors, doesn't go to the intake on the L8T, then that isn't IT. Does the L8T have a road draft tube? Only you know what your meaning is, I just asked for clarity. BTW, I'm happy YOUR motor doesn't use any oil. None of them should.
  7. Now think about that and what it means for a motor that is just short of the limit. Say 10.8 degrees. It has to be making physical contact between the bearing and journal. GM is doing what GM does when it has a teat in the wringer. Lie, deny and delay. The shear number of units involved before they acknowledged a problem sort of proves that. On a parallel note. Oil viscosity will not drag it that far. If it could then a cold day in Minnesota would set off the code every morning. So much for SAE 40 will kill my motor.
  8. Weird one today. Regular price went up 2 cents and Premium stated that same. Range from station to station is hideous. 50 cent spread on Regular and near a dollar spread difference between regular and premium. It's mind numbing. Shell V Power Nitro + is selling at $3.97 while Exxon/Mobil Synergy Plus is asking $4.75 and yet they are a nickel apart for regular.
  9. They've been intentionally nuanced about the specifics. This code thing is smoke and mirrors. The idea that the phases change between crank and cam with bearing dimension irregularities is BS. Has no effect on the phasing of either shafts centerline. Close your eyes and walk a revolution through. It will come to you. Reluctor isn't reading rod position, it's reading off the main bearing rotational reference. They don't even lie well.
  10. What is it? I understand it on the clean side, the valve cover but what is it on the PCV side if it goes TO the valve cover...from if from is the valve cover? Also, does you L8T use oil?
  11. Ever read me saying this for every reason he mentions in that video? To the point people complain about my harping on this! I ran a year (2019) with 0W20, kept records and ran a UOA. Then switched back to *W30 and ran another. See the Lead and Tin in the 0W20? Bearing materials. See it disappear with the 10W30? Otherwise very similar add packages. Did I get a bump in MPG. Best year ever, but not worth killing Pepper for it. I keep receipts. I document and I share. But if it takes a video and a GM major SNAFU and NTSB TSB to get your attention fine....
  12. Smart move. It's good. Yes and please test. I'm doing a motor right now that has improved (lower wear metals) and hasn't hurt mpg either. Moved from 0W20 to 5W40. I don't do blanket statements or laughy emoji's for Lakes Videos. I don't ignore data.

  14. Practical Application Moving from the Garden of Eden to the Swap of the Sump..... A quart of oil is, by volume, 70 to 90% base oil. 20 to 25% of that quart of multigrade is viscosity modifier. The sliver left over are support chemicals. That word SUPPORT somehow gets lost in the fray when oil is discussed. Base Oil does the lubricating, the additives support that charge in various and important ways but they are not the hook the duty of lubrication is hung on. The base oil is the most important part of the quart. Full stop. So what is with all the additive hype? Short answer? $$$$. There is a popular You Tube channel that test oils whose tag line is "It is always all about the additives." He is popular but his is not a professional and has followed the flute of the Pied Piper's (professional marketing) out of town. Oil has only one job. Wear prevention. Everything past that is a side benefit. Anything with enough viscosity to maintain separation integrity will prevent wear. And any base oil with that value will perform that job. The question is then how much is enough? And that is the cue for the Pied Piper to show up and pitch, "Well....it's complicated". Not really. There's enough and there is not enough. Parts touch or they don't. It gets complicated when we start trying to 'find the edge' of enough. And that is where argument breaks out that has no place in the machines requirements. It's place is in the person who is promoting 'something other' need. Why are you trying to see how close you can stand to the edge before falling off and then accepting and promoting falling off some percent of the time as okay? Why? I know how the EPA benefits. I know how the OEM benefits. I even know how Big Oil benefits. But not the guys in the trenches. That part is baffling. People lining up at Jones Town with Kool-Aid glasses in hand....
  15. As true as that is, and I agree it is, the problem remains and these 13 pages were and continue to be a process to find remedy for those who own this particular flawed engine. IMHO this went better than most. Remember, asking questions implies that you want to hear the answers. Even after your question is answered and your interest in the topic has wained, others may need more. Prov 18:13 reads, "When anyone replies to a matter before he hears the facts, It is foolish and humiliating."
  16. Social Engineering. A search of this term gave: [Quote] Social engineering Security In the context of information security, social engineering is the use of psychological influence of people into performing actions or divulging confidential information. This differs from psychological manipulation in that it doesn't need to be controlling, negative or a one-way transaction. Manipulation involves a zero-sum game where one party wins and the other loses while social engineering can be win-win for both parties. A type of confidence trick for the purpose of information gathering, fraud, or system access, it differs from a traditional "con" in the sense that it is often one of the many steps in a more complex fraud scheme. Wikipedia [Close quote] Getting everyone who speaks your language to agree on the meanings of words, the letters in the alphabet, to structures of atoms, the numerical system and its......oh you get the idea and know well what social engineering is. However, in that short list the 'common good' of every human is the result and the goal. Not all social engineering exercises are so noble. So universal. So pure. I'd like to apply this to Nationalism, Politics, Religion, Ethnic Prejudice but we have a ban on those polar topics. But we do have on polar topic that is not ban....OIL Kind of why it's my favorite. Well, and it benefits my equipment and myself to know the truth concerning it. It would also benefit all... Do we need to know it? No. We live without knowing how to read and write, figure numbers; but our experience is enhanced if we can. Gen 3:1-5 reads: (Offered as facts being different from truth and facts not always being helpful) [Quote NWT] Now the serpent was the most cautious of all the wild animals of the field that Jehovah God had made. So it said to the woman: “Did God really say that you must not eat from every tree of the garden?” At this the woman said to the serpent: “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden. But God has said about the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden: ‘You must not eat from it, no, you must not touch it; otherwise you will die.’” At this the serpent said to the woman: “You certainly will not die. For God knows that in the very day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and bad.” [Close quote]. I bold the un-useful fact. He even tells them in what way! They would acquire the ability to 'know' good and bad. Not remotely close to the truth. They always had that ability. They were given an instruction and the ability to chose or 'know' good and bad. The difference wasn't in their God given ability to chose but in their right to chose. How can that be said? Up to that point they had chosen to 'accept' Gods instructions and direction. Satan told them that if they chose to decide for themselves....yes....in that way they became like God. And it did. They did become like God in that way. That wasn't the lie. The lie was that if they did so they wouldn't die. And they most certainly did. The fact that they took control away from God in deciding what was good or bad cost them their very lives. Which.....harmed the entire human race..... Why would Satan do that? He coveted the worship humans gave to God. He promoted HIS way, made it seem to them as if it was THEIR way and deceived them from doing it GODS way. And humans have been refining that process for thousands of years...... Marketing 101. The important thing is, that even though this happened...it did not invalidate the TRUTH and remaining in the truth, on any topic, gives one freedom from everything and over anything but death. That's in God's wheelhouse. Now....what it that? What is true?
  17. 186,380 Mile Service 4/30/2025 Replaced 3M hood PPF with Xpel film. Warranty claim. Business (Johnson Tinting) has a 10 year warranty. Installed originally 9/20/2016 just under 15K miles. It did it's job. Not a chip one anywhere the film was present although there are a few on the edges and one behind the film further up the hood. Dr. Color Chip time. Film lifted is the reason for the replacement.
  18. And now we have proof it is dimensional and not metallurgy. https://apnews.com/article/gm-recall-engine-failure-cadillac-gmc-3472a0a11e0b048ea4c43f7c438bf980
  19. Full SAPS oil will kill your motor and foul your plugs. Just under 20K. I'm looking hard and can't find that pesky ASH! 1250 Phos / 1350 Zinc Not if you rings and guides are tight.
  20. $3.11 Ah, some movement.
  21. Old Battery going like the Energizer Bunny! 10 years, 1 month and 20 days. That is how old the OEM factory installed battery is in Pepper. It was cranking a bit slow and charging 14.8 - 15.2 volts pretty continuously coming out of winter so though I'd replace it. I do have it on a Battery Tender off and on over her winter naps. Nah....test it first. Belle Tire did a load test and it came up that the battery was slow because it was slightly discharged. 73% state of charge. Health was at 81%. So....the tech says take it for a long drive, she's fine. I followed that advice and eventually (200 miles) it did drop to 12.4 volts (Alternator idle). At that point it measured 12.6+ volts and over 95% State of Health. I really like GM's Smart Charging systems. Guess I need to keep that Tender on more on the off.
  22. Thank you for taking the time to post this up. Very informative and depressing at the same time. A great example of how chasing "margin" is like following Lemmings off a cliff.
  23. Oh I just saw this in a search for something else. You failed to mentioned that you approached me and offered the service at a deep discount to court sale of that business to me. (Should I publish those emails?) And why did you court me? Because I know my stuff. Because you wanted to remain hidden. Because you needed endorsement from an established member in YOUR FIELD to be legitimized from the shadows in a forum you just joined. I "Outed you"? You tried to USE ME. I've leaned NOTHING from you but how much contempt you have for nearly everyone in the business that disagrees with your method. The truth is not in you.
  24. Ah! Wow, am I slow. LOL. Thanks!
  25. What does this mean. I lead a sheltered life. I mean, now does this work?
