First off let me introduce the pick up, 1988 Sierra (K1500) 5 speed, 109,xxx on the clock. I haven't used my truck in say 4 months, and now that i went to move it from where it is stored, reverse works fine but the minute i try to go forward it lurches forward like a foot then ceases to move. And after trying to go forward, it smells horrible. I have smelt clutch before, and i know it isnt clutch. Any help guys?

Is yer emergency brake stuck on?

I had that happen too me once in the winter. the park brake stuck on and would allow reverseing but no forward movement?

Try charging the battery.

Also try going from N to D, to N, to D, to R, to D and the other gear ranges a few times after charging the battery.

My thinking is that if there are electrically operated gizmos on the transmission, these might work better with a fully charged battery. (And sitting there might have drained the battery.)

And mechanical things get "stuck" when not used. Maybe a bit of "back and forth" will work these things loose?

Check transmission fluid too.

You sure you don't have bricks or something in front of the tires to keep it from rolling??

My guess is right along the lines of Bill's. Somethings causing the gears to stick in the transmission.

That sucks though man, good luck on it!

I'm always trying to learn.

Bill190: What electronic gizmos are in a 5 speed (I think that is a manual trans). also, how do you move it from P to R? What is considered park in manual trans?

DC4matt: My guess is that you are putting it into a high gear (not 1st or 2nd) when going forward...

Sometimes I say things to try "in general". And that was with this case above. I have no idea what specific components are in the transmission for the vehicle mentioned.

With that said, the trend lately is computer controlled transmissions. Some have solenoids which when electricity is applied, cause a metal lever to move. And it could be the other way around. Something mechanical may cause an electrical device to operate and give some sort of feedback to a computer or whatever.

So far as I know, if it is a manual transmission, it would probably just have switches to give feedback as to what gear it was in. But if automatic (which I suspect it is), then could have a bunch of electrical gizmos.

You would need to know the specific transmission on the vehicle to know for sure. And then look in a factory manual to see what components it had. Some vehicles might have 4 different transmissions they could have!

Bill190; I was just going by what the original poster indicated (1988 Sierra (K1500) 5 speed). I am not aware of a 5 speed auto in 1988 in Sierra pickups, just 5 speed manual. The automatics were 4 speed (3 plus overdrive if I recall). The only electronics on 1988 manual transmission might be the speedometer connection, reverse switch (so it lights up the backup lights), and perhaps a neutral switch (but I am pretty sure there is a switch on the clutch pedal (clutch has to be pushed to start) and not a neutral switch....

The original poster has not responded so my guess still stands, he was trying to start forward in too high of gear (perhaps 3, 4 or 5 instead of 1st or 2nd).

I've worked with the public a long time and people sometimes say they have one thing and it turns out to be something else. So could be automatic or manual in my book!

And some people are not good at communicating what the problem is. So you kind of need to "interrogate" then to find out what is actually going on.
