I posted in the Full size area but have not gotten any replies, I guess it is a dealer only kind of answer.

Perhaps someone here can look these up? thanks.

The ABS light has come on intermittently for the last year and now it is constant above ~15mph and I finally got some time to look at it. I shorted A-H on diag connector and got codes 81 and 86 and 13.

I need the descriptions of the codes to troubleshoot further. I have checked the fuses, etc, nothing found.

Thanks to anyone that has these code descriptions.

... I checked the fusible link, reset the codes. The test drive only set code 13 (brake on while in 2WD, even when it was not on) so am going to troubleshoot the brake switch now.

According to Haynes:

Code 13: Check the wiring and the connectorsfrom the oxygen sensor.Replace oxygen sensor.

Code 81: will set if the ECM detects an open or short circuit in the 2-3 shift solenoid.

Code 86: will set if the ECM detects the calculated transmission ratio lower than the known ratio in first or second gear. The ECM uses this information to detect shift solenoid problems.

Quoted from the repair manual, hope it helps

Is your Burb 2 or 4 wheel drive?

With this year, you should be able to short two connections on the ALDL diagnostic connector and get the ABS light to flash out the *ABS* diagnostic codes.

These diagnostic codes would be different from the engine computer diagnostic codes. And the code readers they sell at automotive stores typically only read the engine computer codes.

What the codes mean would be in a GM factory service manual set for your year/model vehicle. And this would depend on the type of ABS you have.

So there are 3 sets of codes! Engine, rear wheel only ABS, and 4 wheel ABS. All different codes!

Then to troubleshoot the problem, you're going to need the GM factory service manual set instructions anyway.

A lot of times these ABS units need to be rebuilt and you can send them away to have that done. But you don't know for sure without reading the codes and testing????

So I suppose you could get the factory manual and wind up needing to get the unit rebuilt. Or you could send the unit in to be rebuilt and find out it was some other problem.

This place rebuilds them...

Thanks for the comments.

I did pull the ABS codes, those are the ones I listed. If I had a factory manual, I would not need to ask these questions in the forum.

I have codes 13 and 15 now, depending on whether I am in 2WD or 4WD.

I have Kelsey-Hayes 4WAL ABS brakes.. from the troubleshooting section,

One of the codes received will be a normal system code: code 12 with the brake not applied in the

2WD mode; code 13 with brake applied in 2WD mode; code 14 with brake not applied in 4WD mode;

or code 15 with brake applied in 4WD mode. This normal code allows the brake and 4WD switches to

be tested without having to use a scan tool.

I have ordered the brake switch and that should take care of it, thanks.
