Rattling Sound At Low Speeds

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've got a 2003 Yukon XL with 57k. Bought it used this February.

Over the past few months I've noticed that there's a slight rattling sound at low speeds, just when you start moving. And it only happens occasionally, maybe 10% of the time. Really hard to reproduce (or maybe I just don't know the variables I need to control in order to consistently reproduce).

Any suggestions on what I should tell the dealer to look for? It's got 2000 miles of warranty left, so I want to make sure this is thoroughly resolved under warranty, and not after!

I'd say make a recording of the sound when the vehicle makes it, and pay REALLY CLOSE ATTENTION to what the environmental conditions, time of day, etc. are as well as how/where you're driving so you can have the dealer try to duplicate it.

In order to make a recording of it, I'd probably have to put a mic under the vehicle, and then leave it running all the time because I never know when it's going to happen. But that would be ideal, if I could give them a recording saying "here, it sounds like this"

I'd bet on the exhaust being the noise. Catalytic converters can break up internally and rattle under certain loads and RPM ranges. That's pretty common and easily solved. If you just have something loose, it's not going to be covered by any kind of warranty. You may have warranty remaining but it's most likely just a powertrain warranty.

The GMPP Major Guard coverage is more then the powertrain, but it's definitely not bumper-to-bumper, either. For whatever that's worth. You can read about it here:

http://www.gmprotectionplan.com/majorguard.html

As an example, we've got an A/C ticking sound that's come up during the first year of coverage, and the parts and labor to fix that is covered by our warranty. We've got it scheduled to go in.

The problem with the GMPP Major Guard coverage is that there is a $100 deductible per visit. So you're going to spend up to $100. Because it's per visit, not per item, you want to get everything covered in one visit (and only pay $100 one time) rather than multiple visits and pay $100 each time.

"Exhaust system and catalytic converter" is on the specifically excluded items under warranty, so if that's what it is, I'm out of luck on that one :-/

HMMM...I got my 2000 Sierrra cat replaced under warrantee, maybe mine had a service bulletin? Anyway, I think mine got messed up because of a faulty fuel pressure regulator. I was able to reproduce mine by slowly driving next to a long brick wall, like the side of a mall, and finding exactly what RPM/speed/gear would do it.

If it's a converter it's likely a covered item under the Federally mandated emissions waranty. I just meant if it is something else loose and rattling, it might not necessarily be a warranty item.
