What Transmission Filter Do I Want To Use?

Hi All,

I've got a transmission fluid change coming up for my 2003 Yukon XL, and I'm curious what filter I should be using. I'm going to go with a synthetic transmission fluid, probably Amsoil. But for the filter I wasn't sure what was the best.

WIX makes a filter for my truck:

Looks like I can get that for $19 or so. Autozone sells another filter, I think it was a B&M filter, for $18. So basically the same price.

Really the price doesn't matter so much, as long as it's reasonable. I'm not paying $100 for a filter :-) But if there's a much better filter option out there for, say, $25 or $30, I'd gladly pay it if it will extend the life of my transmission.

Suggestions? Who makes good filters? By the way, Amsoil doesn't make transmission filters, or at least they don't make a filter for my vehicle. Amsoil does carry the WIX brand filters, though.

I have a 2003 Yukon XL with the 4L60E deep pan transmission (at least, it measures three inches deep and they said at Autozone that anything over 2.5 inches is "deep").

In a recent independent breakdown of oil filters, Wix, AC Delco, and Purolator Pure One all rated well above any other offerings.

I would think that this level of quality would also apply to their transmission filters. But take it for what its worth.

I have a hunger to know more.

As to trans filters, they mostly just keep out the chunky stuff anyway.

I'd be interested in a link to that study.

What about NAPA Gold? I've heard good things about those filters.

That's because the are identical to the Wix filters. Wix just brands them for NAPA.

fyi - Same with the CarQuest premium line, also a Wix filter.

Note-The budget filters both NAPA and CarQuest offer are also made by Wix BUT are made to be econo filters and thus are not of the same quality as the premium filters both sell.

Normally I would take an AC Delco over any other brand except a Wix. From my observations they are about identical in quality so either one IMO is fine.

Since I run 5,000 mile OCI the SuperTech works great for me. It was getting some good reports when used for regular (short) OCI's. If I was gonna run 10,000+ OCI's then it would be the WIX for me.

I was curious about any "new" testing.

LOL. Chunky parts. Pieces of steels, clutch material, ball bearings, stuff like that - right?
