'76 Big-block Sub beats '98 Vortec 350 Sub

I was out watching the street races last Saturday, minding my own bisuness with the old Sub parked off out of the way.  Some young guy in a '98 Suburban (probably his parent's) asked about my Sub, he wanted to race.  What the heck, there wasn't much action that night, at least there'd be some racing, right?

So we line em up, get the signal, and I hit it.  I pulled him off the line, but where I really racked up the distance was in the top end, I walked him pretty good.

So he wanted to run again, I guess he thought I was just lucky.  We lined up again, same result, although I let off a little at the end so nobody would know how fast my '76 really was, keep em guessing!

I told him it was a 454 before was raced, I guess he didn't see the headers sticking down below the body?

So, a '98 Vortec 350 is about 285 HP, well over 300 ft-lbs of torque?  And I figure they have lightened the weight on Subs some in the last 25 years, right?  And I know that my Sub is a little longer and little wider than the new ones....

Another great thing about driving an old truck, whooping new trucks!

Thanks, Pacodiablo!

It's been a fun project, bit by bit.  The last thing I did was to put a subwoofer in the back, helps out the bass but without the thump most of the kids are trying for these days.  It takes alot of power to crank up something as big as a Suburban.

Right now it's in daily driver mode, so I'm mostly done with mods on it.  I'll just keep it well maintained, and in a few years it'll be time for a new paint job and maybe some interior upgrades.  If the 454 ever gives out I expect a 502 would be nice upgrade, eh?

Nice way to stomp 'em, Jeff

Paco's right... your sub rules. So nice and well kept.  I am green with envy over how clean and well-kept it is under your hood.

One day I'll get all that stupid grease and dirt from under my hood :)

Once I get the Corvette ready for the AutoRama show in November I'm going to finish detailing the engine compartment.  All it really needs is refinishing on the brake booster and master cylinder, and some new hood insulation.

Torque Junkie, when you get ready to cleanup under your hood check my website, I have some pictures of how I masked off to paint the block in place, and paint the blackout under the hood with the block in place.
