Nerf Bar Noise?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I installed my nerf bars a couple of weeks ago on my 2007 Sierra NBS and ever since I installed them, they have been making popping noises when I stop, take off and turn. I tightened them as much as I could but they are still making this noise? Is there any way to stop the noise? maybe by adding something? I have an SUV with nerf bars on it and it doesnt make any noise? Thanks for the help.

I put some on my '07 when I bought it. No issues.

I was hit in a parking lot. After the dealer fixed the ding (which required taking the bars off) it creaked to no end. Drove me insane. I thought it was a bad fit on the panel they fixed. Didn't think it could be the Nerf bars.

I'd take it back....they couldn't hear anything. Anytime it rained it would stop (must have lubricated it somewhat).....

so to make a long story short ..... I took the bar off the one side after looking at it I could see some metal on metal marks from rubbing. I just put a few big washers in to prevent the rubbing as the truck frame flexed (on corners/bumps etc.,) Put some grease all around. Retorqued to spec. The noise is gone. I know next to nothing about cars but was able to fix something that the dealership couldn't on 3 attempts.

short story

look for rub marks

a little grease

torque to spec

Was the rubbing that you saw on the brackets that bolt to the frame or the bolts that bolt to the nerf bars itself? And what is the lb/ft of torque on these usually? mine didnt come with the torque specs for some reason? Thanks

My rubbing was at the mount to the frame. Not at the pillar or to the bar themselves.

I believe I used 70lbs.

I didn't read it but here is another thread same problem w/ lots of responses.

It probably matters as to what type/brand of bars. The GM OEM bars mount to the rocker panel.

They are not OEM, I bought aftermarket, so they attach to the area which was stated above
