Flowmaster Super 40 Vs 50 Series

I can't decide between these two mufflers. I know the 40 is louder, but Im worried about drone.

 

The 40 is DI/DO 2.5" and the 50 is DI/DO 2.25".

 

The only thing is going to change is the muffler, keeping stock headers/cats

 

 

 

your opinions would be appreciated

I love my 50 series delta flow single in/dual out. I dont have any "popping" while accelerating, just a nice and deep tone. However, it really depends on what kind of sound you like.

Is it hard to have conversation with someone while driving around? Thats the only thing that worried be with the super 40. I know its gonna be louder in cab, but I dont want to have to yell so the passenger can hear me.

 

my other question would be: With 2.5" pipes will the truck have a deep sound or raspy?

I put a 40 series on my truck, and there's no popping or rattling. At highway speeds I find myself raising my voice, but that could be because of the mud-terrains, too. The 40's give it a nice, deep 'muscle car' growl at idle, too. I love em!

I put a 40 series on my truck, and there's no popping or rattling. At highway speeds I find myself raising my voice, but that could be because of the mud-terrains, too. The 40's give it a nice, deep 'muscle car' growl at idle, too. I love em!

 

 

Thats good to know, I was worried it would sound like my buddies K10 with glasspacks(really raspy)

With my truck I installed a original 40 series 2 chamber SI/SO. I just cut out the old muffler and welded in this new one with 9" of pipe to fill up the room from the old one. So the truck still has the stock exhaust pipes. I have a decibel reader and took before and afters from in the cab and at the rear.

 

At idle stock I measured the decibles to be 60 at the rear. I'm now at 75. In the truck I measured the noise level at 65MPH. It was 60db with the windows up, HVAC off and radio off. It is now at 70. There isn't too much droning resonance nor is it obnoxiously loud from in the cab.

 

Now of course with dual outlets it will be a slight bit more and if you put larger tips say 3" or 3.5" it will also increase the sound. If it was me I would go with is to go with 40 and 2.5" of 3" tips.

I put a 50-series DI/DO on mine and I LOVE it. I considered a 40 but after I rode in a friends Dodge for 100 miles with a 40-series my mind was made up. In my opinion the drone is a little too much if you drive any significant distance and especially if you want to have a conversation without raising your voice...

I got to thinking. I didn't mention that this was in my 2000 1500. Now on my 70, I have 2 40 series with 3" piping. Now it is insanly loud! Especially since the pipes exet before the rear wheels.
