Detent Cable Help

I have a 1982 chevy k-10 that has had an engine/tranny swap in it. originally came with a 305 and maybe a 700r4, but now has a 355/th350. the detent cable broke, and while purchasing a new one i found that the old one was from the 700r4 witha crimp on end to make it work with the th350..

So i ordered the correct one for the th350, and now i can't get it to hook onto the carb, it is too long. I am not sure if the correct linkage is on the carb, or even if that matters, but the cable seems about 2-3 inches to long. Am i missing something? are there different lengths for these cables? any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I had to replace one on my Dad's 89 a few months back....the first one they gave me was too short thus the truck wouldn't go full throttle. I took it back to the autoparts store and got the correct length and all was good. The best way is to take the old one w/ you for sure.

thanks for the reply. i did take my old one with me, but it wasnt even the right one for the application, so i couldnt use it for much. I am starting to think that maybe i have the wrong peice on the intake that the detent goes through. not sure if there are more than one mount, but i am gonna check it out.

 

any other ideas?? i don't want to harm the tranny by driving without the detent...

Can you take some better pictures of the area around the carb. How the detent cable is hooked. I try to look at mine tomorrow see if I can help you. Mine is an '80

here is a picture of that side of the engine. the detent cable mounts to the same piece as the throttle cable. it was taken before i cleaned things up a bit, but everything is the same. thanks
