hello everyone. i recently picked up a 2002 gmc sierra 1500 z71 5.3l it is a beautiful truck and runs great but i have a question just before it shifts into 3rd gear it seems like it does a surge of power then shift and even then the shift seems almost slow and has excessive amounts of rev in between like i would say by about 200 rpm or somthing in that area. it only does it when your applying the throttle a little harder and running the motor to shift around 3000 or when its wide open its more noticeable. does it in to/haul mode does not seem to matter. i recently did the tune up (plugs wires) i also went and cleaned the mass air flow sensor and the tps sensosr along with the sensor above th tps it seems way better but still there. how do you test the tps sensor for the proper voltage it should be like .4v to 5v isnt it? . sorry for the long post.

You did not say which transmission you have ... if it is a 4-sp then you likely have the 4L60E.

... these slow shifts are likely an indication of transmission wear

... take it to a transmission shop or a mechanic that you trust for an opinion

... it is possible that you might get some more life out of it if the mechanic suggests changing shift solenoids, but this is likely only a short term fix

... how many miles on this transmission.... the 4L60E's often need rebuild attention somewhere around 120,000 to 140,000 miles, depending on how hard they have had to work during their lifetime.... and you just got it so, you likely do not know how it was driven or taken care of over the past 7 or 8 years.

 

Mine needed a total transmission and torque converter rebuild this past summer... and now it works great.

sorry truck has a 4l60e like you said. the truck has 147000 kms on it so i think thats 90000miles. i took it to the tranny guy today had the scanner hooked up. all the electronics are working correctly he believes that the check ball in the valve body wore a funny hole or somthing like that. it goes in next week for the valve body to be checked and fixed for around $300. how much was a total rebuild just so i know? anything else i should keep an eye on? also i get a low grown when i turn right i am low on power steering fluid. and i did hit some muddy trails just before it started happening( had to dump some leaves) :lol:

please do not get the valve body done ,you have a worn out 3-4 clutch and you are wasting your money,the valve body spacer plate will get replaced during the rebuild,if it needs it ,you can buy a GM rebuild for more money and has a nice 3 yrs warranty for $2400 CDN plus labour(est of course) if your gonna keep the truck ,do it ,rebuilds work but have a 1 yr warranty ,dealers have a dedicated tranny guy and is an EXPERT on these trannies 'cause that is what they do all day every day,

 

what happens is you take your trk in and say ,"I need an estimate for rebuilding my tranny" ,it then gets removed and torn to bits and the tech gets a parts list together and presents that to the advisor and calls you,you can then ask what a SRTA costs installed as a comparison, SRTA (service replacement transmission assembly)

 

 

the above is what happens in a warranty situation every time

 

you can look at both estimates and make an informed decision.

 

and with every tranny job the the cooler gets flushed and flow checked for warranty purposes for you and the dealer .

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
