Oil Pressure Going Too High?

Hey guys I just changed my oil for the first time on my truck that I just bought. I put in 5.4L of oil, is that a good amount? Anyway before the oil change my pressure gauge would sit on 275kpa or around 40psi I think. After the oil change my dial will start just under 275 then if I really give it some gas the needle will go up past the 275 mark possibly reaching almost 400kpa or 57psi. I've never had a pressure gauge so I'm wondering if it is normal to see the needle move up and down so much.

Yep. There should be some fluctuation in the oil pressure as RPM's increase and decrease. 40-60 psi is completely normal.

my "02 z71 5.3 at idle is nearly 50, normal cruise 60 and dang near pegs in git mode. 118+k miles.

Sounds like you've got the right amount in there. The 5.3 engine calls for 6 qts. Looks like you've got 5.75 US qts in there. Some people have noticed in some engines, that 6 qts puts it a tad over the full mark. As to the pressures, you may have not paid that much attention to it before. Now that you have changed your oil, you're just noticing it more. You're good to go!
