Mazer18 Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 I'm looking for suggestions on wheels. I've never bought new wheels before so I don't know much about them. I currently have stock steels on. I do know there are different types of material used. Steel and aluminum alloy. My truck sees a good bit of off-road use and I'm a bit worried at seeing a shortage of steel wheels compared to alloys. Would steel wheels be much stronger than alloys in off-road conditions? Steels are cheaper from what I've seen and I'd hate to bust an alloy and have it pop a tire in the process. I'm not sure what to look for in regards to fitting a wheel to a tire size either. Obviously the diameter has to match but what about width and offset? Backspacing? If any of yall have a recommendation please let me know. Thanks in advance.
ryan_hermanutz Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 You’re not crawling your truck, so alloys will do just fine. Your wheel offset will be dictated by lift, some say 4.5" back spacing, some say less so it all depends on the lift. The width will be driven by the tire, which is suggested by the lift as well. You mentioned going with Zone for a BL so use their 4.5” lift as an example. For that lift you can put a Max tire size: 33 x 12.50 x 17 with the Back spacing: 4.5"w/17, 5" w/18, 5.75"w/20's. Or on the CST 4” lift it is designed for a 33 x 12.50 tire on a 8” wide wheel with 5” of backspacing.
Stevens03 Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 4.5" of backspacing on the new trucks isn't enough. You need about 5"-5.5" with an 8"-8.5" wide wheel. Polilshed wheels are nice, but require alot of work to keep them nice. Chrome is better but you either need to take them off for winter or wash the salt off alot. So it's a toss up. Alot of people keep their nice wheels for summer, and use the stockers for winter. Check out wheelsforless.com for a starting point. Also Ebays a great place too. Good luck hunting, there are a million choices
