I don't know about him. I disagree that the cluster has to be coded to your VIN. I know it does not from personal experience. Mine on my 05 has been working perfect for 5 years now and was plug and play. Other vendors on ebay said no they don't when I contacted them. I know a ton of people who have installed them with no issues what so ever. I do recommend to try and stay in the same year or close to it.

 

Now 03 and up radios have to be programmed to the VIN. I know this from experience as well. I have an 06 in my 05. Had to get it programmed to work.

When I had my 04 Trailblazer the replacement cluster was plug & play - no errors (it displays the mileage on the cluster, not on the vehicle).

 

It probably wouldn't be plug & play on a GMT-900 as Onstar gives you a mileage report via email every month.

ON-star gets it from the cluster, I believe. You change clusters and what is on the new cluster gets reported.
