Crankshaft Position Sensor Recall

Recommended Posts

I've been having some of the typical symptoms related to crank sensor failure in my '02 8.1L Sierra and went by a dealership to get a quote. The service manager read the codes and confirmed a crank sensor issue. Rather than pay the $500+ dealer quote, I bought a sensor and was going to put it in when the weather was nice.

My neighbor backed into my truck, so I went to the local collision repair shop for a quote. The body shop quote listed all the recalls that might be applicable to my truck with a GM telephone number.

One of the recalls was for a crank sensor that I've never heard about. I called the GM telephone number and it was kind of a cat and mouse conversation. The rep would not come out and say GM would fix the issue, but indicated that if the local dealer indicated it was an internal factory flaw, they would.

Anyway, I'm now going to go back to the dealership to see if they can declare the faulty crank sensor a manufacturer's defect. If they do, I'll get the job done for free. Has anyone else had their crank sensor replaced under warranty outside of the normal warranty period?

The recall information reads as follows:

NHTSA ID: 07V521000 Issued: No. of vehicles: 00011974

Engine and Engine cooling on certain pickup trucks equiped with the 8.1L V8 Engine, the crankshaft position can operate intermittently or fail completely. If the sensor operates intermittently, the SES light may illuminate and the Vehicle may run rough. The Engine may stall, and if so, may Re-start immediately or after a Cool down period. If the sensor becomes completely inoperative, the Engine will quit running and will not Re-start. Either of these failures can increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during December 2007. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 and GMC at 1-866-996-9463.

My answer:

Here's a link to a safety recall GM did and ended in Dec. 2008. It lists the VINs of the vehicles that are supposed to be affected (mine wasn't in the range of listed VINs but still had the same symptoms):

I talked to GM and they wouldn't cover a penny since I did the work myself (I didn't find out about this recall after the work was done and the recall duration ended).
