Confused About Gas Prices.

I just heard on the news that gasoline prices will be at $3.00 soon. Yahoo reports today that oil is at $79 per barrel.

In July 2008 oil prices were at $140 per barrel and we were paying $4.00 per gallon of gas. At the time the government was considering taxing the oil companies for windfall proffits. Well, the oil lobby disuaded the government imposed tax. The oil companies were able to "justify" the $4.00 per gallon cost based on the oil price.

Today in my area we are paying $2.89 per gallon for regular gas. With oil at 56.42% of what it was in July 08 ($79 ÷ $140 = .5642) why are we not paying a proportional price for gas? We should be paying $2.26 per gallon ( $4.00 x .5642 = $2.2568) not $2.89.

If $4.00/gallon was justified at $140/barrel, how can $2.89/gallon be justified when oil is now $79/barrel?????

I have to believe the extra $0.63 we are being charged per gallon of gas is nothing but greed. With US gasoline consumption at 378 million gallons per day, the oil companies are netting over $238 million per day extra. Windfall proffit???

That is what started this recession, and it is what will keep us from climbing out of it.

Who do I complain to?

OK, rant over.

here in Anchorage, I have not paid less than 3.25 / 87octane in the last year. Out of town its even higher, and we refine the fuel here in state!!!!!

Yes I have noticed the gas prices have been slowly going up. There seems to be always something that causes prices to go up.

This is a huge part of the reason we are in the economic standing that we are in, also many other things but this is one of the top 10 i would suppose. The higher prices in fuel effect everything we do, not just our daily driving. Since every thing we buy has fuel transportation costs behind it!

Gas jumps over 3.25/gallon and this will be another summer vacation at home. I cant justify in my head or on paper why the hell I would pack up and drive somewhere with my TT when I would only be getting 12mpg at the most. We went on one camping trip when gas was 4.30/gallon here and the trip to and from cost more then everything else! it seems like it was about $90-$100 to fill up every 200 miles. To spend that much in gas I could stay home and have fun!

I'm with ya... We have a trip planned to Myrtle beach with the camper and if gas goes up, we won't be going either.

We picked up a pop-up last summer, so the extra gas for towing isn't a huge concern, but our trips out will definitely be closer to home because of the gas prices.

What do you think gas prices will be in 10 years? The same? Lower? or Exponentially higher? I remember in high school (Im 25) paying around $1.20 a gallon. That wasn't but 7-10 yrs ago. If it doubles again in ten years were are talkin $5 -$6 gas. Another thing is that our dollar is worth less. Hopefully our economy picks up. It just seem ridiculous to spend as much for fuel as you do the payment and its getting that way. The future is here, I'm all for renewable resources and boosting technology. Energy is what keeps a modern day society running....if it gets too expensive we will fall. Truth is our standard of living isn't sustainable. In the next few decades we either need to figure out how to become sustainable or we'll all be living in caves and tents again.

Thats my rant. I'd love to drive my truck EVERYWHERE but it sits in the garage and I drive it when I can justify it....most times the 28 mpg car goes out.

i believe summer gas costs more than winter cause because of summer additives. but the demand for heating oil goes up which in turn drives up the oil price thus making gas higher. what makes me mad is why these oil tycoons need to be making 400 billion profit.

Just be happy you don't live in Canada. With the current exchange rates, I am paying $3.77 US for a US Gallon of gas. Once the doucebag who we elected as Premier of our province harmonizes the provincial and federal taxes on Canada Day (of all days to screw every consumer), we will be paying a full 8 % more.

How else can you afford this :dunno: :

Actually i thinkn its the winter blends that cost more because of the additives. That is why winter mileage decreases.

Please folks, do not fall for the greens/administration anti-capitalism talk of big oil is bad, big insurance is bad, big bank is bad, big pharmacy is bad etc….Better know as the class envy ploy…The greens are blocking more and more drilling, blocking refineries (we have to import refined oil i.e. gas), blocking more and more coal fields, more and more nuke plants…we could be self sufficient with lower cost but no we want windmills that we have to subsidize….

And do not look just at profits; look at profits as a % of sales and as return on investment…do not fall for anti-capitalism actions that are swamping us now…..

It is simple, there is so much crude above ground and so much demand, more crude above ground the better:

Its very simple, if the automakers, oil companies, and wall street would stop blowing each other and run their damn business with the cunsumer in mind we would not have as many problems as we do. its more then possible to make our trucks get upwards of 50mpg, they simply dont need to because we still buy and drive, and the oil company speads the wealth as a result. Not to us of course. On top of that its rumored that we have enough oil and natral gas within the states to substain us for many many years, and we are not using it. While we are using the rest of the worlds until there is very little left then we will probably sell ours for some off the charts price, and oh yea even though we live here we will for sure pay top dollar for it. Things are run by people who care about themseves, and thats it. I got news for you, this countries "elected" officials dont give a flying F about us, as long as they live the high life. And let one of them tell me I dont need to have a truck if I am going to complain about the gas prices, they dont need a 5000sq ft house either but I bet they dont think about resourses when they heat that monster!

There ya go, got me all fired up and its only 9am!

This is what I got for greenpeace.......

As human beings we are the only species on the planet that help and keeps our weak ones. In the wild they would be killed, and killed early because they could mate and creat more weak ones! we allow this, and this is fine, im not saying take um all to the back 40 and shoot um. Im just saying it causes us to have faults in every way possible.

This country was founded and built on war, we used guns. we ate meat and used guns, I think we should go back to this, you get meat and guns. If you dont eat meat, your weak and will die, if you cant shoot, your weak and will die. If you eat meat you will want to kill and eat more meat (by this i mean kill meat to eat or people for the meat/land they have). Anyone hear of Dr. Dennis Leary???

I vote for DRILL BABY DRILL

    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
    • So, lot's of googling and reading, and a trial fit found, that indeed they hit the newer fatter caliper. I did some re-testing today, and found just 3/16" worth of washers was enough for the wheel to spin freely. I added 2 more on each, and again it spun freely. Tested lock to lock with the 4 washers, about 5/16" not quite the 3/8" Im considering, but pretty close. No issues. I've been looking at the BORA .375" spacers and using extended lugnuts to get back lost thread due to the spacer. All the ET lugs I've seen are all .33" reach inside the wheel lug holes. For those that don't like spacers or think they're unsafe, I think it depends on what type of spacers you're using and making sure you get good quality hubcentric ones, and if you're using bolt on ones, regular mainenance, checking the spacer lugs. Not wanting or needing that much spread. Looking for the minimum that will let me run these rims and tires.  it does look to stick out a little, but I really want put these on. and use the stock all-terrains in the winter.
