Rpm Gauge Reading Lower

I have a 2005 Silverado 1500 4.3L with 79xxx miles. I was driving home from school today and I noticed immeadiately that my rpm gauge was reading lower than it normally does. Just idling, it sits right around 1k rpms and today it was at 500rpms... the engine sounded ok, but even when reving the engine it was reading less than it normally does. I would say it was reading between 400-700rpms lower than before. What would be the cause of this?

Is it reacting properly.

Does it read the usual RPM at highway speeds

If your driving an auto, its supposed to read between 500-600rpm's at idle, about 900-1000 if its a standard...and should be sitting at about 11-1200 if you just started it.

If its not reacting properly, as in smooth movement...your stepper motor may be gone...there is a TSB on this...I believe its 70K or under they cover the whole thing...70K to 100K I believe they cover the part only...you pay for install.

The truck is an auto and doesnt stall when driving. I got it up to 70mph and it was saying 1500 rpms, as opposed to normally sitting around 2k. Driving at 45mph, I'd let off the gas and it dropped down to 1k rpm... seemed kinda odd.

Yeah a little hey.

I think your cluster may be on its way out man.

I drove my truck around and the rpms were normal.. I don't know what happened but I'll keep an eye on it. If it starts acting up again, I might just replace the cluster. Thanks everyone for your help

Yeah thats the start of the stepper motor going...get in and see what the dealership covers for you...I believe its just the cluster after you hit the 70K mark...and nothing after 100K
