I see some rust under my truck. I want to put under body coating. Does any body know what is the right aproach to do this job, and what tools and matirials I may use.

Thanks

All of the usual suspects are out of business or mostly gone. Rusty Jones being one of the big ones of yesteryear. Life time guarantee. But whose life? Bankrupt.

Many Europeans use Waxoyl. Expensive though.

Up here in hill and mountain country - we have a few places that still do 'oil undercoating' or 'hot oil undercoating'. Done at a garage with lift. They drill holes (and plug) so oil gets everywhere. It is messy. It is legal (in my state at least). Costs about $75.00 and is done every year.

I plan to have my new truck done. My 2008 that I traded - showed lots of surface rust on the frame and all underneath. Too soon to show rust on an almost new truck. I did not have it done on the 2008 but should have.

Those that live in salt free areas don't really have to put up with this. But here in hill and mountain country - they spread salt on roads like it is going out of style.

The only thing that works and is a reasonable price is oil.

75 dollars is not that expensive when you think about the cost of the truck and preserving it IMO. Sad that so many good busisnesses have gone bankrupt is the current economic situation.

It would be my personal opinion that the damage is already done and that you are not going to add any benefit by using a coating unless you strip everything and start from scratch. If you just threw a coating on there you would be locking the rust in and it would still be spreading under the coating. The past few times we have been at the dealer and they tried selling this to us, I have always asked them how they can avoid locking in any contaminants that are already under the vehicle, and they can never answer and usually drop the subject.

EDIT: you might want to look into POR15, it has chemicals in it that will stop the rust from spreading.

POR15

Yes, I have used this on my tractor frame. Just a little rust. Could have sanded it down and repainted. But just sprayed a little of this to stop any more rust. POR15 seems to work good.

I had a friend purchase new a 2000 Chevrolet 3500. Salesman told him the factory does an excellent job or 'rust proofing' and no nead for anything else. Now he has rust on bottom of doors and many places not seen or you really have to look to see. He did not heed my advice to oil undercoat. Now - presently - he has truck oil undercoated every year. Never too late - but he waited too long for this.

Thank you I will look into it.
