4l60e Filter

Gentlemen,

Does anyone have any clever ideas on how to remove that rotten seal in the valve body where the filter inserts on the 4l60e transmission? I love chevy but that system seems to be pi-- poor.

you talking about the o-ring that goes in the neck of the filter??

I'm getting ready to change my filter/fluid. Does the filter just pull straight out? Then the seal gets changed? I've got over 60,000 miles on this filter so I figured it's time to get it done.

it's a rotten brass thing with a rubber seal inside it that presses into the valve body. No o rings used. There is a new one in the filter kit, getting the old one out is a bitch.

I don't mean to thread-jack, but, how do I tell if I have the "deep-pan" on my transmission? Can I tell just by looking at it? I have the 4L60E as well.

You can tell by looking at it. The deep pans have a portion that drops down, rather than being flat straight across. The shallower end is above the y-pipe (a.k.a. intermediate pipe) of your exhaust.

Pan has a step in it. Hard to explain but I have looked a quite a many I can visually see the difference. Now that I have had both shallow and deep pans on a couple I have serviced in the same weekend.

Also, A GOOD stiff dental pick and just keep away from the aluminum in the valve body you DO NOT want to mess it up (I have used a coping saw blade before to simply cut it enough to weaken the metal and bent it and pulled it out with pliers if its a pain the the A$$). Wipe the port out then apply some ATF to the port and the seal bump seal in with a socket.

That Seal is a PITA!!

But with the right tools and the time it will come out....also besure its seated all the way up there before you put the filter on

Cool, thank you. But, I think I have to return the filter kit I just bought, as the guy told me it was for the shallow pan tranny and now I think I have the deep pan.

Cool, thank you. But, I think I have to return the filter kit I just bought, as the guy told me it was for the shallow pan tranny and now I think I have the deep pan.

When in doubt take them both home, you can always take one back.... It makes things go easier when you pull the pan off....
