Clunking Noise Help

Hi, my 02 Tahoe has mild clunking noise that occurs between shifts. It's worst when going from drive to reverse or vise versa, but is also there inbetween shifts. I thought it was the Ujoints, but those checked out fine. I also inspected the sway bars and tranny mount. Any ideas what to look for? Any typical problems around the 70K mark?

Typically both of the things you mentioned cause a clunk sound.

 

You can disconnect the drive shaft and check the end play on your pinion gear, you may have a bad pinion bearing.

 

Check that you havent broken a bell housing bolt for the trans.

Check engine mounts

You can disconnect the drive shaft and check the end play on your pinion gear, you may have a bad pinion bearing.

 

Check that you havent broken a bell housing bolt for the trans.

Funny, I was going to pull the shaft to check the pinion as well. Do you think simply pushing and pulling it by hand would tell me if there is play?

 

I had a similar probelm with my 99 hoe and it was the slip shaft that goes in the tranny. Lubricating the splines would help for a couple months but then it would come back.. I had to buy some special spline with a coating on it, I can't recall what it was

yes...damn it...I forgot that one....slip yoke is something else to check for sure. You can buy a slip yoke eliminator kit for that truck.

 

If the pinion moves in and out by hand any noticeable amount you have found the problem for sure...usually its done with a large flat blade screwdriver and a dial indicator.
