Water Pumps

Well just finished changing the water pumps on both my 2001 Chevrolet Z71 and the wifes 2003 gmc Yukon. Both pumps have been leaking for several thousand miles ( just been topping them off waiting for a decent day to change them out). With 95,000 miles on the yukon and 92,000 miles on the Z71 i decided to also change out the belts and the thermostats on both. Its funny that they both went out at the same time. The yukon appeared to be leaking at the weap hole and the Z71 was leaking at both of the gaskets. I did the Z71 first and it took about 2 hours, knocked out the yukon in about 1.5 hours. Also flushed both cooling systems. A good day saved a ton of money by doing it myself. The dealer here quoted me $650 just to change out the pump with labor on one of the vehicles. I did both trucks including belts and thermostats for about $500, saved about $800.

I will be doing this soon on my 02 Denali. What brand of pump did you go with? I had to replace my radiator a couple of months ago. Dealer wanted $700 just for the part! Did it myself with one from NAPA for under $300 Life time warranty to boot. Wish I had the water pump when I pulled the rad. would have been east to do then.

I bought one from advance auto. It was made by ASC. From what i read is supposed to be a good pump. I would recommend that you change the thermostat also. Don't buy the wrong one like I did. The thermostat and housing are one piece and initially the parts store sold me just the thermostat. Had to go back and exchange it for the one built in with the housing.
