2005 2500hd Transmission Issue

I have a 2005 2500HD with the 6.0L. Love this truck. I've had zero issues and have about 85,000 miles. I changed the transmission fluid at 35,000 and again at about 60,000. It shifts very smooth and makes no abnormal noise. I tow fairly often and keep a close eye on the trans temp gauge and have never seen it climb over about 175 or so.

Occasionally, and by that I mean maybe twice a year, I will start it up cold, put it in reverse and the engine will rev, but the truck will barely move. Almost seems the transmission is slipping, as if I have a foot on the clutch (it's an automatic). After a few seconds, it gains full power and will act completely normal. Like I said, it happens maybe twice a year if that. It happened again a few days ago. Fluid level is fine, it's red and smells normal.

Is this something I need to worry about or get checked? Is this a common issue?

Thanks in advance for the help.

If you own a ford it may take up to 5 minutes to warm up in the winter before it even switches the gear in the Transmission.

Normally you should always warm up the Engine/Transmission for aleast 5 minutes before driving .

You are doing everything right so I would take the time to let it warm up..

Stravis is talking about putting the truck in reverse. When starting out on a cold morning yes the transmission will hold gears a bit longer driving foreward to get the engine and transmission to heat up faster. BUT the truck should pop into reverse right away with no slippage. On both my Sub and 1500 HD I have to have a good foot on the brake when backing out of the garage on any morning, especially a cold morning when th idle speed is up some.

5 minute warm up, , maybe a bitl long. Let him sit a good 2 minutes and drive away very easily until your good and warmed up. But that is a topic for a whole other discussion.

But regarding your reverse issue, , you might want to go to the dealer and have his tranny guy hook up a co-pilot and go for a drive. The co-pilot may pick up some little thing like an incorrect line pressure or say a sticky solonoid valve.

In a slightly different situation going for a drive with the tranny guy and a co-pilot saved me a transmission as we cought the problem right away.

Good luck.

my truck will fly if the motors idleing high...its a split argument on here whether to warm up or not..i do i let my truck idle until the rpms go down to 500 and the oil pressure levels out...by throwing the truck in gear while its idleing high the power from the higher rpms go straight through the trans causeing the quickness in reverse

Mine does exactly the same thing when cold and I have not started it in a couple of days. I can get it to go engage in about 10 to 20 seconds after engine start up. I do park my truck on a slight incline though.
