Gmt 900 Projector Headlight Project

Thought I'd share with you guys my upcoming project. I'm thinking about either the FX-R projectors or maybe the TSX ones, not quite sure yet. I've got a headlight torn apart (via Dremel) to check things out.

Anyway, enjoy these pics; I'll update as the project progresses. If you have any thoughts, by all means... Share with the rest of us :thumbs:

You know you could have cut the lens off and then cut out the inside reflective assembly with just a few little tab cuts, right? Then once you got the projector fabbed into the reflector, you could cut out a smaller hole in the housing. I don't know how you can seal that back up and get it to fit into the truck and still be stable now. I applaud your efforts for attempting this in a stock housing but I think you're going to have problems putting that back together. It probably would be a lot easier to start with an aftermarket projector headlight assembly and swap in a smaller projector like the TSX.

The link to the "projector" headlights you posted... well for one, they are R!CE, and two...not good quality projectors in the first place. SO, I'm doing my own thing.

 

I cut both the lens and the back to see which was easier and would yield the best results. If you look at the housing, its missing the tabs so I cant put it back on the truck anyway. But you're probably right, removing the lens is probably going to be the easiest method, but like I said I wanted to try some different ways and see how it worked (plus I needed to know exactly how deep I could mount a projector).

 

Does anyone have the link to "clearing the OEM headlights" complete with pictures? That would probably be most helpful (since I did jack up the lens getting it cut out "my way")

 

Thinking about it and looking at the measurements of the stock housing, I might end up going with the Lexus projectors now, since they are similar in size to the Acura TSX ones. Depth shouldnt be an issue either.

 

This project is just to have some fun and mount up the projectors and see what happens, thats all. Thanks for the inputs! :thumbs:

Here are pictures of my headlight project I've been working on. They are the eagle eyes headlights that I've painted, and changed the LEDS and halos on. The halos and LEDS light up red (no they are not legal and I'll have a switch for them). I agree the other ones are pretty rice, but you can modify an aftermarket light and have it look good. I did not do a retrofit because the output is actually pretty good with the projectors that come in it.

Thats cool...I'm just not a fan of the aftermarket assemblies out there for our trucks. To me, they dont look good and make the truck look "cheap" (but again, this is just my opinion).

 

I thought about getting some to modify and maybe change the projector and do some other odds and ends to make them look better, but in the end would be doing pretty much what I'm doing now just with a different headlight...so I picked up a spare on eBay to play with.

 

I havent ordered the projectors yet either...so plenty of time to waste goofing off :thumbs:

I got something even better, two videos. Big Red Texas Truck over on TMC shared his "How To" with us in a 2 part video. Hope it helps and good luck with the mod.

These are the projectors I finally decided to go with (photos courtesy of "the retrofit source", www.theretrofitsource.com)

They use the H1 HID bulb and ballast assembly, but use the projector to focus the light and help mitigate the glare so often associated with HIDs. These housings are a bit smaller than the Lexus and Acura ones, so it should be somewhat simpler to mod the existing housings.

Once I get them in, I'll post up the resulting mess :)

Got in late last night from a weekend getaway, and found a package on the doorstep!

Missing unfortunately is the retaining nut for the projector housing, but here are a few teaser pics... Enjoy!

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
