How To Remove Blank Out Covers So Fog Lights Can Be Installed

Recommended Posts

I am just trying to see how anyone removed the fog light inserts from a non-fog light bumper. I have seen a lot of topics on how to install the fog lights on Sierras that did not originally come with them, but I would like to see if anyone can help explain how to remove the blank out covers to make room for actually installing the fog lights.

Looking at the inserts themselves, it almost looks like there are tabs in certain locations that secure the blank out covers to the body of the lower bumper. Is cutting them out the only way to remove them or is there a trick that releases the cover? I was almost hoping they could be rotated and would pop out but I have not been able to get them to turn.

Just looking for any advice or suggestions on what may have worked for other people.

Welcome to GM-Trucks!!! :D I installed factory fog lights last year and I wish there was an easier way but you will have to remove the upper radiator baffle, grill and front bumper to access the end caps. I would suggest buying the fog light kit if you can find it because it comes with instructions. Overall the installation took me 4 hours taking my time not trying not to break anything. We like pics on this site so post some up when you can...

Oops.. I see you have a Sierra...

Thanks for the replies Zakman and kawtoy.

While I was hoping there was an easy trick to avoid having to cut out the covers for the fog lights, it looks like that might be the only option.

Zakman, I do appreciate you taking the time to reply, but I should have been a little more clear. My truck is actually the GMC Sierra and has all the mounting hardware already in place. The only thing I have to is remove some plastic covers that take the place of the fog lights. Luckily, I don't think the GMC's are as involved as what is required with the Chevrolets with remvoing the bumpers and the end caps.

If anyone else has any suggestions or a good method that they were able to use the produced good and clean results, please feel free to pass that knowledge along.

I removed mine to paint silver by just unsnapping them from the backside and sliding them out the front. Put them back in from the front side and lined up the prongs and they snapped back in. Don't know about all that other stuff.

Thank you TheCheap-*ssModder,

I just got done installing the factory fog light kit and removing the blank out covers was VERY easy. Just as you explained, you just have to release the three tabs from the back side of the bumper and then push them out. There was no cutting or trimming required.

On a side note, any one looking to install their own fog lights (OEM or after market), the GMC Sierra is very easy to do. This is coming from someone with almost no automotive modification experience at all. The hardest part was taking the time to just run the wiring harness for the lights in locations that wouldn't get caught on anything and getting them secured into place. And, that was actually not bad at all.

Thanks for the replies everyone, this web site has really helped to give some excellent directions and made it VERY easy to complete my first modification.

Well, welcome to the world of "I wonder what I can do next". How about the DIC switch, or the DIC panel, the "Vette servo mod, side bars, bed covers, exhaust systems, air box mods, etc. It's as bad an addiction as any chemical, and IT SURE FEELS GOOD!

I'm looking to install factory fog lights in my Sierra.

Do I just go to the dealer and get fog lights?

Is there a specific kit or part numbers that I require?

You can go to any GmAccessories site and get the part number for the kit. For the Sierra it is part number 19170447. Either get it online at any of the gm parts sites, or get it from your local dealer. Check prices first and get it at the cheapest place.
